10gal college dorm tank ideas!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it is natives you are truly after I strongly suggest Green Sunfish. They are aggressive and have good colors. Plus they shouldn't get stunted in the tank if you have 1. You can easily find them in Virginia. We had some in a tank at my work this summer when I interned with the Ohio EPA.

Green sunfish will EASILY outgrow a 10, or even a 20 gallon...

Really? Maybe I mixed my fish up. Maybe I am thinking Pumpkinseed? I think one of the fish in that family doesn't get too large. I must of mixed them up.

P seeds can get pretty decent size as well...maybe dollar sunfish, or orange spotted sunfish?

A small group of darters would be cool in a 10g. You could also do Bantam, Orangespot, Bluespot, or Blackbanded sunfish with them in a 10, but only a couple. Any of the pygmy sunfish would be really neat as well, and there have been several species popping up on Aquabid lately.

I used to keep and breed dace, mostly blacknose dace in a 10g in college. The males have some beautiful spawning colors and are very simple to keep and have no problems eating any prepared foods. American eels are quite fun to keep. It wouldnt be a forever home, but if you get a small one, they grow fairly slow and will pellet train. madtoms are always a cool choice too. I did enjoy having a crayfish tank in college. It was all hardscape with lots of big boulders and caves, they have interesting behavior if you put a bunch in with adequate hiding spots

A fish I used to have in a 10g that was well planted with a piece of driftwood was the Least Killifish, they stuck to the top of the tank and were great fun to watch while I had red shrimp on the bottom. Probably one of the coolest fish to raise is the Pygmy sunfish (all 6 varieties of Elassoma are cool looking)....Erica weiser on the Nanfa forum is an expert on these fish and goes into great detail on how to have them.

I ended up keeping mosquitofish, a mad tom, and some blackness dace. No problems with the water once i treated it.
