110 gallon, My First Planted Tank ~ Ideas For Improvement?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 26" tall medium light planted tank. NO CO2.
6500K light about 1.5w per gallon
add Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorous. You need a multi-nutrient, (preferably something that includes your trace elements). You also should add an organic carbon, like excel.

Stick with Java Ferns, any of the Anubis varieties will grow great.
I have a large ruffled sword, (which is like an Amazon). You need to add root tabs every month or so.
I also have wysteria which shoots to the top quickly.

Don't be intimidated by the depth, just stick with low light plants, there are plenty out there.
Forget PH. That is pretty much a myth meant to sell product.
Remember NPK + macro/micro and carbon and you'll be fine.

and I also have about 8 cichlids, they don't bother any of those type of plants.........

WPG isn't really a thing that works, its all about PAR. But you can do medium light plants and stems even in a tank this tall and with those fish, no need to stick to just fern and anubias. I keep a high tech tank with cichlids so it can be done, just needs a bit more work and research, but its well worth it.

Thanks, which light fixture are you using? How many gallons in your tank? And what fish? Pic please :-)

I will warn though, you might want to get a power head or two....I run two ehiem 2217's on my 75....and they suck for flow. Are you using the spray bars or nozzles with it? You might be fine, but if you find dead spots get a powerhead of some sorts

I have a hydor 550, but thing a more powerful one is needed. Recs?

Sounds good on the waiting to upgrade lights before getting more plants. I have two possible ideas but I am unsure how good either idea is. Also, depends slightly on how much money you want to throw into this. Your tank, as far as planted tanks go, is very, very tall, making it more challenging to light, however, because we are avoiding high light that actually makes this not so bad.,

Idk if I can post links to sellers on here, so I won't....but idea #1 is to get a 48" Finnex RayII fixture AND a 48" MonsterRay (also finnex) to get to medium lighting.

The Pro's: LED lighting will last for years and years without needing to be changed, also might consume less energy.
The Con's: LED lighting is what it is, you can't change the color combinations and the lights also shoot straight down more, meaning that in order to properly light the tank, you will need 2 fixtures for good coverage and all. Also, more expensive initially.

My next idea is to get a Solar Catalina T5-HO Fixture, the 3 bulb one (or heck, maybe even the 4 bulb one given how tall your tank is)

The Pro's: T5-HO lighting is very versatile, you can change color combinations and you can make burst lighting effects (such as, run lights for 8 hours, but run the third and/or fourth bulb for only 2 hours). It is also initially cheaper.

The Con's: More expensive over time. You NEED to change the bulbs out at least once a year. Within the first year, this option already becomes the more expensive of the two options.

The tank is 18in, deep, with 2 fixtures 6in apart, I wouldn't be able to open the hood without moving the lights. :-(

Looks like it will have to be a single fixture, and moonlight leds are a must have. Watching them in the 'moonlight' is one of my favorite things about having tanks.

I mean, I like my korelia lol

I think get one 750, and position both power heads where they are in the back, blowing towards the corner diagonal to them, making an X shaped flow...seems to be the best way to do flow, and a very knowledgeable person told me to do it and its working.

You want some movement in all plants, just gentle. No dead spots.

Thanks, creativity will have to come into play with the 3d bg, I like korelia too and so do the fish!

Get the Catalina thing then. I use it on my 75, and then can put moonlights on it, they didn't charge me for it either. You can always call them as well, that's what I did. They also send you bulbs with it, so you can get bulbs there at the same time, one appropriate for planted tanks.

Ok, Ive decided to buy new glass tops to be able to fit the two finnex lights. Just fell in love with the monster ray and must have this light! However, I just spoke with a finnex rep about the ray ii and monster ray. It appears with this combo, six inches apart, the par (over 60) is too high for my low tech 28 high x 48 long x 18 deep tank without co2.

His suggestion was the fuge ray, that includes moonlights and the monster ray together. The par would be approx 35-40. Any thoughts?

Anyone using this combo on a tall tank? Id be buying the 48in for each light....
