12 Volt Man's Aqueon 150 Gallon Startup Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sure. this is a fairly recent shot of the 65 salt.

it will be a while before I get a third main tank down there, as I have a million other house things to get going before I get the electrical upgraded in the basement (whole basement on one circuit, cant put a third tank down there until I get more power)

I also have a 20g long quarentine tank in my laudry room that currently has the nasty clown loaches in it. they are doing well..even in a 20g lol

Great pics :)

Nasty clown loaches????????? I must have really missed something here, how nasty can loaches be?

Clown Loaches are know for contracting ICH out of no where. You can have them in your tank for years and then boom ICH out of the blue.

actually, my loaches were nasty. nippy as hell. they were swimming up and biting my redhooks..saw it with my own eyes.

I had suspected that, moved them out, thought NO, it cant be, moved them back in, and then saw what was really happening..

its rare for clowns to be nippy, but I guess since they are a botia, they can have an element of nippyness to them sometimes..

I like many, have been keeping clowns for almost 20 years and this is the first time I have had aggression issues with them..but this is only the third set I have had.

my loaches tend to live forever..the last set I had were 10 years old when I sold em..

Nastiness is not just botia, my clown loaches are nippy, too. They nippy at all my fish all day.

Is that a brackish tank?

the tank is full saltwater, specific gravity 1.020

started off brackish a few years ago (sp. 1.005), but eventually became full salt.

the fish do great at full salt. at all ages.

even very young monos do awesome in full salt. my LFS puts their baby monos right in their salt system.

its better for them then freshwater at that age IMO.

not enough salt means they fungus up and/or go dark and stressed.

I thought botia were clown loaches

Botia is a genus name, not species name. Many loaches are under the genus Botia. Some sources classify clown loaches as Chromobotia.
