12' x 39" Metal Frame Above-Ground Pool?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
these thing usually won't last for more than 2 years, a plastic stock tank may seem smaller and a bit more expensive but last for more than 10 years!
What usually goes bad with them for them not to last very long?I would think they would hold up pretty well but I've heard of people using them for their fish but using a different type of liner in them.

catfish have fin spines, gar has teeth. These can be very bad for plastic liners. The steel would also eventually rust. For shorter term though I'd think this would be great- and they're plumbed for filtration, which is nice. I'd buy one if I had the space.
Eventually what you could do is sink it in the back yard so the ground takes the weight- I've seen people do this around here for low-budget swimming pools, though this still won't help the puncture issues....

Anything's possible I guess but I've yet to hear of gars using their teeth to gnaw on non food items and the catfish spines or used for defense as far as I know..If these fish would do such a thing they would have to be pretty big to damage a liner...But then, that's the whole point in using a pool,to house BIG fish.....That's where the thicker liner would come into play.

you can try adding an extra thick liner on the intex liner

Cool, thanks for the info, anything really would help, I mean I just need something CHEAP that can house my monsters. Can't put anything outside because I live in MD. Any ideas where I could find something that could hold up longer than a pool for around the same price???

The only problem is space and where to put this because outside is not an option.

I'm still not sure why the pool would not last very long.Someone mentioned this a few posts ago but didn't explain it.In any case, there is a member who frequents the shark and ray section and he has a large pool for his sharks. His name is Turbo, shoot him a PM and see if he can't give you some advice.

I have had this exact pool setup with aros gars and large catfish it never once leaked only water on the floor was from me spilling or fish splashing it was set up for about a year but I also had the smaller 8' diameter intex with the inflatable ring that I had up for several years and had no problem that had all the fish from the bigger one it it before I moved them and put my rays in the smaller one we
Also have a 14' metal frame intex for the kids have had that thing for years and it still holds water every year I set it up while stock tanks will give you added security they won't let you get the size you want I was gonna go all stock tank myself but the largest I could fit in the basement was 300 and that's not big enough for what I needed so it was pools for me
