120/180 Gallon Stocking Ideas...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actually got a good deal on a 150 tall, so im going with it, the guy had a florida gar in it ironically...i dont see how the gar is going to break its back? the 180 is wider sure but the depth is the same, 24''...im not trying to be rude purely curious...

as adults, florida gars have a hard time turning in widths less than 24". also with shorter widths if something spooks it, it could run straight into the side of the tank. look through the gar forum and you'll see that there are quite a few people that have had large gars break their back.

Ok that tank should last a while depending on the length, just be prepared because even though most Florida gars top out under 2' they do have the potential to grow a bit over 3'. They do grow relatively slow after 12"ish though.

yeah ive been doing a lot of research on florida gars, adult sizes range from 15-30 inch in the wild...so its up in the air between 15-30 in the aquarium, though I do feel I will get at least 1-2 years before he would hit 20+ hopefully, if he gets to 20+ I will have to re-home it...right now it looks to be about 10-12''

this is similar to my idea. i found a 155 gallon but couldnt get it etc etc so im looking for a 180 now .. thinking .. florida / silver aro / 3x bichirs / 1x or 2x pbass ... worst come to worse ill go with 2x gars instead of the silver.

ok i thought i addressed this for u in another thread. i might not have though. aro tend(not always but tend to) be a no no with gar. Pbass are def a no no with gar. tend to be too hyper and damaging to gar. drop the aro and pbass and get more gar or bichir for that tank and it would be great.

in a 120, you run a pretty high risk of the gar breaking its back, you'll want the 180+ for it. why not just get the 180? if you plan on getting it in a few months your wasting your money on the 120. you could use the $300 you saved on not buying the 120 to get filters etc... for the 180.

the 120 is 4' by 2' if it is the standard 120g/ which means infact it is a great gar tank for most of its life. unless u have a small gar in there there is no real need to worry about a florida gar breaking its back in this tank. Floridas can get to be 24" in captivity in which case ull need to upgrade around 20" but that will take along time, if u can get it to that size.

hope this info helps

Hey I opted for the 150 I found, its a tall so it has the same footprint as the standard 120 (4'x2') but its taller at 30''
I dont really understand what your saying, you contradicted yourself saying my tank is great tank for most of the gars life then you said unless i have a small gar, did you mean a large gar, like a gator gar? cause for sure the tank is way to small...for florida gars the tank should be great for at least 2 years

no im saying for a gar bout 5" that tank would be bad. too small of a gar in too big of a tank. could have trouble finding food as well as run the risk of damaging its back.
for a florida it will be great for probably well over 2 years. not always, depends on the fish but getting ur florida to out grow that tank is uncommon.

Ah I see what you mean, small fish in a big tank, got it, yeah the gar is between 8-12'' right now, ive not measured it just gone to check up on it a few times
I am hoping to pick up the tank tomorrow (fingers crossed), paint the back black, put a thin layer of play sand, set up the river rocks/pebbles, pick up M&F Convicts and some stability to get the cycle going...then monday pick up the gar and then wednesday pick up the clown knife and the ornate bichir, the filter media will be coming off an established tank so im not to worried about cycling just trying to stay safe
