Big price difference between the cascade & the fluval. I think you can get 2 1500s and a 12 pack of beer for the same price as one fx5

thats why i recommended a xp3. But a fx5 for $170 shipped from a few sellers on ebay is cheap too. So either would be great.

I have a 4x2x2 which is currently filtered by 2x AC110s. They do an okay job but leave me a good bit of waste to clean up during water changes... At one point it also had a UGJ (Under Gravel Jets) which kept the debris from settling. It worked real well but looked fairly ugly which is why I removed it... I now plan to add 2x Hydor Koralia powerheads to prevent waste from collecting on the bottom.

4x2x2s are great tanks. I'm sure your Oscar will love his new home and I commend you for giving him such a nice home.

First off leave the Oscar in the 29g for now. It will take a while for your new tank with new filters to be able to support the Oscar.

Learn about the nitrogen cycle, there is bacteria that needs to grow in your filters to remove ammonia that the fish produce. Ammonia will kill the fish.

What type of filter is on the 29g. You may be able to move this filter to the new tank.

The filter on the 29g is a tetra power filter for 30-60 gallon aquariums. So that is a no go.

Filter- Get a pair of AC 110's you can look up the code for the 33 dollar ones.
Heater- Hydor Theo 300 Watt
Top- Glass canopies from the same brand who made your tank. (They aren't all compatible)
Light- Double bulb strip light from brand of your choice.

Like others said..."cycling" may be bit of an issue. Get your filters you plan on using for the 120 and set them up on the 29. It will be way over filtered, but then again a fish that size should get the media seeded fairly quickly.

In the mean time make sure there is a good lid on the 29.

im about to setup my 125g, similar gallons bit different size. i will be running an FX5 and AC110, maybe an xp3 also. i've got a 250watt heater and plan on building a lighting system with t12 or t8 bulbs since they're gonna be the cheapest. as for a top, if you want to go the cheap route also, get egg crate($10) instead of the glass tops. i've got egg crate tops on my 55g and 20g. water does evaporate a bit but you can just top it off every once in a while. you can get 2 or 3 40lb bags of play sand at home depot for $4 a pop for substrate and get some rocks from a landscaping place pretty cheap for decor.

Read up on cycling the tank (if you haven't already). I don't think it's going to be difficult at all...

If the Oscar is and has been living in the 29 gal with a small filter on it for a while, then that tank is 'cycled' with enough bacteria to accomodate your Oscar...

So if you put the media from that old filter into a new filter... You will loose a good bit (I would guess half) of your bacteria which grows on surfaces besides your filter media. But the portion of bacteria you transfer into the new tank on the media will instantly start working to convert your waste. Small bacteria colonies reproduce and expand rather quickly. It's waiting for them to appear out of no where that makes cycling such a long process...
