120 gallon Black Ghost Knifefish Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was actually trying to point out that the tank was 4-foot for the eel, not based on your 75 gallon comment but I guess it works for both. :) I just don't think that a 4 foot tank would be great for a tire track eel... There are other smaller spiny eels though if eels appeal to the OP.

I don't know enough about BGKs to know if they would eat Rams? I would think possibly once they got larger. Rams aren't all that big. You'd want a big group of them in a tank that size I'd think. If you had a lot of plants they'd be fine, and they're interactive for a dwarf. I like the Bolivians over the German Blues - more hardy, a little larger, and generally more OK with others. If the BGK won't eat the dwarf cichlids you could do a few different types of them (Apistos, checkerboards) in a planted tank.

Not sure kissing gouramis would work - check out Seriously Fish's info on them.

There are lots of other gouramis that would work though.

I do like the idea of upper jaw bichirs, but I'm a poly lover. ;)

Other cichlids that might work (others may chip in for more options)
Geos, Rainbows, Festivums, Keyholes, Severum

A 120 gallon is too small. The tire track should be able to reach 36". The reason many don't exceed 24" is because they are kept in too small of a tank.

Even at 30", the tire track and the BGK will require 75% water changes every 3 days. This is before other fish, which will likely push it to a daily or every day event. Since many people aren't prepared for or able to do those types of maintenance, it's not a good choice.

I suggest smaller peaceful and colorful schooling fish with the BGK as the centerpiece. It's hard imagine a more attractive tank.

Imo, one has to be careful not to over stock with a school of fish that will become large and force a lot maintenance, unless there is a commitment to doing it.

If your wanting an eel, i would go with a peacock eel since they rarly get more then a foot in length. Also a german blue ram would possible get eaten by the bgkf. It really depends on the fish. I had a balck ghost knife fish with tetras and he didnt eat a single one. I habe another one that is really small and ate the fins of my betta fish which i had to move. Other good fish would be
Pictus catfish
Smaller plecos like bristenose
Large tetras
Angelfish
African butterfly fish
Severums
I also like the idea of some bichirs
Festivums
Discus
Large rainbow fish like bosemani
And many more.
Most bgkf are very peaceful. Best of luck!
