120 Gallon Saltwater Tank Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you for the information it really helped.

Ok so today I ordered the RO/DI Filter from the filter guys. I also purchased (2) 250W aqueon pro heaters and enough instant ocean salt to treat 160 gallons from amazon. As for the tank, one of my local Petsmart has a 120 gallon 60"X18"X22" with canopy and light for $350. They also have a 150 gallon "48"X24"X30" with canopy, light and a under gravel filter for $530. I can order a drilled 120 gallon "48X24"X24" tank with two overflows from Petco but it only comes with the tank and overflows and costs $700. It will also take about 2 weeks to be delivered to the store. As nice as a drilled tank would be, i am leaning more towards the 120 or 150 from Petsmart and just buy a HOB external overflow box. I would like to hear what you guys think I should do. Thanks

I would buy the 150 personally, you won't need the undergravel filter though. A HOB overflow works just as good as a drilled tank/overflow. And for the extra 300 dollars its just not worth it. Just make sure you get an overflow that gives you enough flow rate for the size of your tank. I would reccommend the Eshopps PF-800 or the PF-1200. Probably the 1200 for the extra flow.

Alright I have a few more questions if you guys don't mind me asking.

With the RO/DI filter, can I add the water from the filter directly into my freshwater tank? Or do I still have to add seachem prime? Also when I get the saltwater tank, all I will have to do is filter the water through the filter and add salt right? Sorry I don't really understand how the filter works. I ordered the: OCEAN WAVE FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI from The Filter Guys if that makes a difference.

Also does anyone have any good stocking lists? I definitely want to add some clownfish and tangs but what else? And I have come to the realization that I can only have two clowns, correct? Or does that only apply to the same species of clownfish?

Thank you in advance :)

u can add the RO/DI water to any tank in your house. :D

throw away the prime. you will not need it anymore. :D

and yup, you poor the RO/DI into a 5g bucket and mix the salt in that, them dump the bucket in the tank. unless your just topping off evap, then all you have to do is simply poor the RO/DI in directly, like you will do in the freshwater tanks.

btw your freshwater fish are going to love you...lol

when using RODI water in your fresh water keep an eye on your ph as RODI water normaly has a lower ph than tap water
