120 Gallon Saltwater Tank Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have came to the realization from another thread that I would need a even bigger tank to be able to get tangs. And well clownfish and tangs were really the only SW fish I was interested in so now that makes me think. What If I got a 28/29 gallon nano/bio cube and made it FOWLR and put two clownfish in it? Would that work? And then make a planted FW community tank with the 120 or 150 gallon tank. The price for both tanks and setups will probably equal up to around the same price as a SW 120 gallon tank. What are your ideas and thoughts? Thank you.

you can easily have tangs in a 120 or 150. Not a whole bunch but at least 3 of the smaller ones (no unicorns)

A 120 gallon SW tank Is pretty pricey. For the livestock I wanted to get a blue tang, yellow tang, two clownfish, and whatever other fish looked cool to me. But now I guess I can't keep tangs in that size tank except for the yellow. Also since it's my first SW tank I kind of want to start off small and not risk it all. So if I could get a small SW tank and a large FW tank, for the same price as just a large SW tank then that sounds good to me. But I still have a lot of thinking to do...

man both those options are great. that's a really tough call!

Its option #1 for me. Your gonna spend a little bit more money but in the long run you will have MUCH more enjoyment out of a 120gal salt tank. There are alot of options with that size of tank, and it will be much prettier to look at than a FW tank.

I second the vote for salt...it is way more enjoyable than fresh. With a 120 there is soo much you can do. Though I will say your budget is on the low side. Salt is one of those things that either u do it right the first time and enjoy it or half ass it and hate it. I think you will really like salt but it is a much larger investment.

go with the biggest tank you can man. I set up a 40 gal reef and with in 2 months i had upgraded to a 60 then a 75 and now a 240 lol. You're just gonna want to upgrade if you go with a tank that small.
