120g filtration - your thoughts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
love those plants i think ll try them

I use them on my tanks and love the look and effect they have on water quality. They need almost no light and if even in sight of a window grow like crazy. I would recomend them, I bought a plant at Home Depot for about 10 bucks split it up and have it on 6 different tanks.

i have one at my house and didnt know what it was. im gonna put it in all my tanks. they look so nice.

Wow. Thanks everyone for the input. I love the plant idea. I have a bunch of those plants and one side of the aquarium is perfect for it. I'm doing that for sure. Do the fish, like a sev, nibble on the roots?

Thanks for all the filtering ideas as well. I like the idea of two filters and while I have a lot of aquaclears around, I hate the noise the bigger ones make. I may do a second canister filter, just a small one for polishing. And I will increase the water changes. When I first got into this I was told 10-20% per week. But that was before a big tank and big fish.

Thank you. Can't wait to get the plants set up.

love the way those plants look.. please explain how you put them in the tank.. do you plant them? looks like they were just sticking in the top of the tank floating.. sorry for the hijack..

I think the next logical step with your filtration is a sump. You get the added water capacity, which is important for a heavy stock. You could turn your 120 into something around 180 gallons, depending on sump size. The pothos are a great idea too. And 50% water changes 1-2x a week.

There is nothing to setting up the plants rinse the soil off the roots and stick them in the tank. The plant holds itself up and starts to suck up nitrates and grows. Wedge them into the back corner and your done.

where do you get the plant? and does it go by other names?TahoeFish to add to your question i run 1 rena xp 4ans ,3 rena xp3's on my 125gal and i run 6 rena xp4's on my 300 gal. i also do 50% water changes once a week.. i am a big filtration guy.. i had lots of piranhas before this and they were pigs

The plant is pothos ivy and you can get it at any home improvement store. (home depot, walmart, lowes, etc) This plant is ideal because it grows well in water and it requires almost no light. It will thrive in any room as long as there's a window in it. It is an indoors plant.

Ideally you should take a few cuttings and put them in the tank, within a week they will start developing roots and after that they will thrive. As you can see in the pictures I posted I only placed a small bunch with a few leaves in the tank and it became a huge plant.

Make sure to remove any leaves from the bottom so you can submerge a few inches of the stalk in the water where the roots will develop (you will see little brown bumps in the stalk of the plant around the leaves... that's where the roots will come from so make sure at least one of them ends up submerged). Any leaves that remain submerged will eventually rot and pollute your tank.

I used cuttings because removing the dirt and soil from the mother plant can be a pain in the ass. and some people have reported that they don't do as well when transferred from soil to water... so use cuttings instead. Also that way you always have a supply of cuttings from the mother plant in case something happens to the one in your tank.

Fish won't nibble on the roots and if they do, it's harmless. I have never had a problem with it.

another tip is to take out the plant every now and then and rinse the roots with tap water... they can accumulate debris over time and that slows down the nutrient absorption from the water.

I have around 30 fish in my 75 gallon (mucho overstocked). I use one Marineland Canister C-530 and the water is crystal clear and nice flow. I will also be adding two (40 gal) hydro sponge filters one on each side and eventually I plan on getting another 530 canister. 530 gph is not as strong as I thought it would be. I figure double the filtration will give me peace of mind until I get another tank to put the big boys in.

Is this that plant ? A bit pricy $70
