120g FW tank. Astronotus ID anyone?

Yea, Its a nice coloration :) Lets just hope it dosen't blotch up when they grow older. The reason Im so interested is that Im planing on making som kind of "hybrid" Oscar it as it grows older so It would be nice to know what kind of O it is.. Are there no true Oscar-freeks here? :headbang2
 
True Oscar freak here :-) He's most likely a junvie Tiger, you might ask OscarFish.com, chances are they'd know. Here's my Tiger when I got him at 4" and then last night at 8-9". Juvie Tigers can be some wild colors.

not a true hybrid though, it would be a travesty to mix f0 astronotus with any typical LFS oscars
 
Woa, thats a huge change in coloration. Would never figure a kid like that to turn out normal ^^ Live and learn. Nice O!

Nah it would still be within the same genus, astronotus - if that what you ment with not a true hybrid? Im all new breeding stuff. Some say it is possible to crossbreed between two different genus, but Im not sure what kind of fish would be suitable to put in there. If the two I have now pair of It would be a tiger/red cross, but I guess its not a hybrid unless the tiger isnt ocellatus
 
If you dare breed that thing (if it is indeed an F0 Oscar) with anything other then another F0, i shall be on the first reasonably priced flight to Sweden to give you a piece of my mind :D

See if you can bag another of the same from the LFS.

Here is a nice example i found just trawling through MFK, Looks like you actually have an Astronotus orbicularis, quite the rarity in old europe.

Wow, the head shape on that orbicularis is wild.

Soil my oscar has a jaw like yours, longer, not so blunt. Mine is just a Petco oscar that a friend gave me, was supposed to be a tiger but I'm relatively sure what I've got is a "wild" phase oscar...just A. ocellatus but not red or tiger - wild colored. As babies they have the intricate markings like TwistedPenguin's oscar above, but with the wild phase ones those markings are white rather than orange.

That might be it CTU2fan, I've asked Oscarfish.com as suggested and they said that actually there's only two valid name for O's - Ocellatus and Crassipinnis. What happend to the rest I don't know (yet) but they arent used anymore.

So, what does "f0" stand for? Would be a bummer to find an angry Craig in my tank when I got home :nilly: Since most color-morphs are man made, mixing them wouldnt couse too much trouble aye? In a few hundred years it might have spread and turned into a nordic perch-Cichlid, but I doubt they will spread much further than too my friends in our hooby-lifetime
