You could do away with the bio balls with the amount of live rock you are going to have. The best advice I can give you on the fish is to do a lot of research on them first.

What I usually do is to type the name of the fish I am interested in to yahoo/google search then add forums after the name of the fish (ie banana wrasse forums) this way it will search the aquarium forums and you will get real opinions from people who have kept the particular fish and not online sellers.

It has helped me in the past.

Okay. I took the miniatus off the list. I read on a few websites that in smaller tanks like mine they have a habit of going rogue and claiming the whole tank as their territory and killing everything else. Maybe someday when I can get the wall to wall salt preds tank I want then I'll get my grouper:) so after further considerations and lots of revision and talking with people the list is-
Around 3x 4 line or goldtail damsels (to cycle the tank, they can be food for the others after that or move to the refugium)
1x larger angel species (girdled, passer, etc)
1x dwarf lion (fu manchu if possible)
1x harlequin tusk
1x foxface
1x goldbar wrasse
1x blue jaw trigger
1x green bird wrasse
1x skeletor eel
I'll add these fish over a few months as babies and watch them grow. Also I will hopefully setup a 30 gallon that I might eventually move the lion to. So he can rule his own tank where he is the big fish with maybe a few smaller fish like clowns or dartfish, but that's a ways off so I'm not too concerned about it now.

The miniatus does have a cool attitude. IMO the easiest and best way to cycle a tank is with cured live rock and a liquid bacterial supplement . The last tank I cycled I used this method and the tank cycled in 7 days and I didn't need to do a major water change like you would have to do using the shrimp method. Using a fish to cycle a tank is frowned upon due to the stress the fish goes through

I have always cycled my tanks with fish. I was planning on letting this one sit for 2-3 weeks then throw in the damsels for another week or two then add in my first display fish.

So I looked more Into the wrasses and now I'm thinking I might want to do calmer/smaller species like Christmas , hoevens, yellow, chisel tooth or grey tooth. Any ideas? I think they would do better since they're not territorial like the goldbar and bird. Also would a zebra moray be better than the skeletor? Thnx

I would leave out the dwarf lion. Lions and angels usually don't mix well. Also i don't think mixing the wrasses is good idea, thalassoma sp. wrasses are generally aggressive towards other thalassoma sp. I would just chose one wrasse.

I have the same size tank and my stock list is a zebra eel, passer angel, yellow tang and 5 yellow tail damsels.

Okay I'll just get my favorite wrasse an maybe another of a different genus. The lion is a fish I won't get rid of. It's a joke between me and my dad and the only way to get him interested in this tank. He loves lions, eels, Angels, puffers and parrotfish. I can't do the parrotfish or puffer so I'm doing the other ones.

No need to fish cycle since you are going FOWLR the cured LR will give you an instant cycle on the tank, if not cured then cure it first then add plus the protein skimmer let sit overnight check parameters and you should be able to add fish slowly. No ammonia or dead shrimp needed, just a good amount of LR

If you won't give up the lion at least pick a different species. The Fu Manchu is known to be difficult to keep and to ween off live foods. Maybe look at the fuzzy dwarf lion or zebra dwarf lion.

Okay. I'll try the fuzzy dwarf or zebra. Also if the wrasse have vastly different body shapes and patterns would it be okay to keep 2-3 different species of calmer small non reef safe wrasse?
