125 Gal w/ LMB and other NY natives

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool.....I'll probably go with the FX5...

That should move enough water right??

What would you use for lighting?? I have 2 48" strips....I also would like to have some LED moonlight......Are the 48" ones on Ebay for like $40 any good?

The tank has a light haze on it that I have tried to get off with White Vinegar.....It won't go anywhere.....I have used light concentrations of bleach too....No luck.....It almost looks like a fog on the inside of the glass but spotty....it doesn't seem like it will show when the tank is filled but IDK yet......ANy ideas??

Don't use bleach on that tank! It probably won't show up when it is filled anyhow.

The FX5 will be way overkill for the 125. It is supposed to move 900gph which will be a lot for that tank. Like I said, the fish you listed don't really need all that much flow.

If you aren't doing plants, any lighting will work. There are quite a few pics in this forum that you can go through to get ideas for tank design.

These fish r cool but u should just stock ur pond wtih pbass and arows

I'd go with some lmb, northern pike, yellow perch, etc.

But here's the thing, I know where you're coming from in that you want fish that you can release in your pond later on. But what about building your fish a big enough tank so that you would'nt have to release them. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with releasing natives. But if they have got used and grew up in a bg tank then why wouldn't you provide them with a bigger tank.

Basically what I'm saying is, taking an offspring of any domesticated kind, for instance a dog. Now you raise that dog (and its a large breed) from a pup. That dog is now relying on you to get it's food, shelter, excercise and warmth. Then when the dog becomes to big you release it into the wild. That dog will not stand a good chance of out competing coyotes, wolves and wild/feral dogs.

Here's what I'm getting at. Those fish will never be as domesticated as dog, cats, etc. They are going to get used to hunting and have similar conditions (but in a smaller environment) as in the wild. But, those fish will never be as wild as those caught in the lakes, depending on what size you caught them and put them in the pond. Even in your pond a wild game fish will do better than a fish that you have raised.

I'm not trying to argue, just showing you what some people are trying to poin out. It's the same reason that responsible people that keep aros, ca/sa and african cichlids, and other fish won't release them into the canals in florida.

Yes, the fx5 is overkill but it's what I'd do for the fish. You could go with a smaller fluval or eheim, but those are the 2 brands I'd recommend. Just match the filter with your tank size and you're on your way.

Soko is right about the raised fish, but a pond with your fish in it is cool. You might have to feed them though, so keep that in mind. Similar to what people do with Koi in their ponds.

As to lights, if you don't have live plants, then anything will work. You could go with a fluorescent shop light that's cheaper than heck. Basically, you can choose whatever you want and whatever price you want. The LED's are the same. Go with however many you need and looks good, and you can always add more too. With LED's it's more the control of them that's difficult. Most of them, you've got to step down the voltage, but if you buy a kit the voltage step down will be included.

Good luck

Oh yeah, and don't use bleach unless you plan on rinsing it many, many, many times. I usually use a fairly hard plastic scrub pad. Let the vinegar soak a while and then a BUNCH of elbow grease. If there's a slight haze left, it'll probably disappear when you fill it. Heck, fill it part way and see if the haze goes away.

ooooooooo u shud stock ur pond with 100000000 exodons!!!
then u cud throw people who u dont like in it and they wud get eaten lol!

iam am a firm believer in using bleach but i allways use declor when iam done

In anyones opinion, what would be an appropriate tank size to house one of these to maturity. assuming few or no other inhabitants.
