125 Gallon Stock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My local water is 70ppm soft.

Hmmm... you may have issues with the Central American cichlids on your list like the JD and Firemouth long term. If the water has low TDS like soft water, the minerals in a fish's body leaves faster than they can replenish it. This leads to stress and weakness over the course of weeks to months, and the fish eventually succumbs to sickness.

I will run out tonight and get a test kit rather than go off what i have heard from locals.

Ok I tested my tap water is 40 KH 70 GH, the water in my tank is closer to 30/55. At this point can I keep my list without jumping through to many hoops or should I go for a completely new stock list?

yeah that is soft water, with a low buffering capacity. This means that your Ph can drop sometime mid week, depending on stocking. This can be fixed by doing a water change twice a week.

Personally, I would look for soft water fish. The oscar and severum on your list will be fine. The green terror and bichir might be okay.

oscar+severum+jack dempsey+green terror would be a cool 125. the should get along ok, well as ok as large cichlids can be expected to get along.

whatd i do personally is drop the oscar from that list and add a six pack of silver dollar and a raphael cat.

ive never kept bichirs cant speak for them though.

This works with my local water. I think this is what I will try. I hope I can find some spotted silver dollars. I have raphael cats now, they are great when I rarely see them so I might look for another bottom feeder.

cool. i like the tiger SDs myself. yeah my raphael is only active when the lights are low but he is great at cleaning up leftover food. rapps has chocolate raphaels right now. if i had the space i would snag a couple for sure. hes got the tiger SDs too.

Water will be too soft for JD. The other fish are fine with your soft water.
