I would suggest, one of your pleco's, the oscar, dat, firemouth, con and JD for your 120.

Or just the jag in the 120, the FH is going to need its own 75 they really are just better off on their own, and I dont know enough about gar's to tell you anything about them but from what little I know they arent so great at being community fish in small tanks.

A lot of people have their FH's in 55's would that work instead of a 75?

yea, would probably be ok as long as he dosen'g get longer than the tank is wide (probably will eventually). If he gets bigger than 12" and can't fit front to back you might want to hit craigs list for a 75.

just go with the oscar and some of your other smaller cichlids like the dempsey and firemouth instead, if you want a more populated tank.

I have two jags with two mayan cichlids, the largest jag being 5" but they seem pretty calm, may just depend on the personal fish. Also, I'm sure to give him planty of food so he won't eat the other jag that is about half his size

5" still isn't quite to maturity yet for a jag. around 6-8" is when their true aggressive and territorial nature will come out so I'd keep an eye on them very closely in the coming months.

that would really be pushing it, though a lot of people do it. as has already been said, the fh may easily wind up being cramped in a 55 depending on how big it gets. the fact that they're so hybridized and who knows the mixture of fish that went into the creation there's no telling how large your fh will grow. it could stop growing at 8" or grow to 16"...there's just no way to know for sure.

I agree....you need to decide what you want in your 125...a small community of lesser aggressive cichlids or a single monster cichlid. you have plenty of options to go with but mixing a jag with other cichlids in a 125 is risky. I had a jag completely take over a 125 at only 7-8" so it was no where near done growing. however you could do some sort of mix with oscars, firemouths, chocolate cichlid, uaru, severum and many others (not all in the same tank, but we could help you find a good mix with these fish) as well as some dithers and bottom feeders.

jag or FH wil dominate the tank... friend had a jag in a 120 and everything hid from it in the corners of the tank.

dont be fooled by fish "being nice and non aggressive" when they are small... when they mature is when their true nature comes out.

but cichlids do tend to vary in aggression even within species. but, be prepared to separate/remove when something goes awol

i think jags and fh's can co exsist. the jag could get nasty and beat the crap out of a fh if the jag is an adult male. it will be fairly larger then an adult FH of either sex

my 125 is nuts though. i have ....

2 female Fh's (1 adult jing kang 1 sub adult zz) both females and good friends
1 juvenile jag
1 juvenile texas
1 juevenile vieja synspilum
2 pink cons
1 parrot x con
1 blood parrot
4 blood red jewels
1 ram cichlid
4 cory cats
1 chinese algae eater (gold)
1 large rainbow shark
9 african knives
1 syno eupterus

syddakyd, yeah that is nuts....it'll work fine for a while but large problems in the future... but I'm sure you've got that into consideration.

I do want to say that I love the aquascaping of your tank though....very nice. :)

yea if i see any real problems i have no problems finding appropriate homes for whoever needs them.

i feed a highly varied diet. also i notice that cichlids odnt bother non-cichlid fish in larger tanks. even the more aggressive cichlids.

there are alot of hiding spots/ dither fish for distraction which im sure helps too.
