125 or 180 Gallon questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 125 and am happy with it. If you were wanting to keep larger fish 18 inches plus you would want the 180. For me the difference in price wasn't worth it....now if I had money to burn, I would go with the 180 :)

You should definetly go with the 180. I have a 180 and a 150 gallon and maintanance is about the same the only difference is the ammount of water that needs to be changed when cleaning. And It takes about 3-4 people to move a 180.

I went through the same dilemma a few yrs back. A 125 g was $400 and a 180 g was $700. That was $300 for an extra 55 gallons. I ended up getting a 125 g for each of my Oscar pairs and saving the $600. The difference is a 180 g is 24" wide and a 125 g is 18" wide. Just depends if you've got the extra money and what size fish you're putting in there.

I recently traded my 180g, 96x18x25 for a 150g 72x21x23 and a 75g. I did mostly because I had the 180 stored almost a year, and finally we decided we didn't want to set up the 8ft length tank. I still wound up stocking the 150 with the planned stock for the 180. Def depends on your stock.

Well bigger is better fine. But you should consider this in mind .
1st will you able to clean and maintain a 180g tank.
2nd U have space for that bigger tank.
Cleaning a tank is a real mess. Although i love to clean tanks , but really i did a cleaning for a 10x2.5x3H footer tank
and believe me
we started at 1pm and still at 7 pm it was not cleaned properly.
than filling it with water was again a time wastage
Though bigger tank requires less cleaning.
Rest i leave to the experts here.:)

I don't really know how heavy a 180 is-however, it took me and three other guys to move my 240 gallon to my house-thing was heavy!! Not only that all four of us are strong guys.

cleaning the tank shouldnt really be an issue - it only takes a few minutes longer to drain some extra water and do some extra gravel vacumming.

One thing I would suggest is this:

IF you decide to go with the 180, step up to the 220 size. same tank, only 6 inches taller.

yes, reaching the bottom is a bit of a pain, but so worth it. the extra height makes the tank look 10x better proportionally. it makes the tank look well proportioned rather than long but shallow..

if I had the room, I was going to get that size. all the equipment is basically the same between the 180 and 220. so you spend a bit more on the tank and thats it. you get a nicer look tank that is 40g more to boot.

as far as the height goes, here is how I clean my 150g (72x18x29.5 tall) -after doing some gravel vaccuming of course:

pythons can be your best friend with big tanks :)

a 180/210/220 is much better than a 125, the extra 6" of width really opens up your stocking and decor options. as far as cleaning, it take no more time than a 125.

it only takes 2 people to move an empty 180 glass tank, its heavy but certainly do-able.

I love cleaning my tanks!! A hassle-not for me it's fun nothing like cleaning your monster tank over a 12 pack of Corona!! I have a large pond however the largest tank I have is a 240 gallon-and that is only because that was the most possible largest tank that would fit through my door!! The bigger the better!

that may depend on the people involved

eg. my Aqueon 150 weighs 281 pounds according to Aqueon's website, which is a ***** for two people to pick up and move any reasonable distance..the LFS sent 4 people to do it safely -and they complained it was heavy lol. and if there is stairs involved, bring 4 to be safe.

glass tanks are very heavy and very ackward depending on the height of the tank..
