I have a 125 and it just finished cycling... now I am doubting my filtration. I have U/G plates with 2 (total) Penguin 300gph p/h's, and a single AC110(ac500) With 1100 gph of water moving, I thought I was safe, but recently came to thinking I am under filtered. I am considering a few things.

Let me start off by saying its a comm. tank which is stocked with 4 pacu, JD, and since my aro mysteriously died, possibly a new aro. Maybe not...

Anyway, back to filtration. I would love to do a wet/dry and I'm ready to get working on it. I would like to use one of the infamous 40g breeders because of its low profile and wide surface area. My idea is to have the outlet off on one end of the tank, tucked within the wall, and have a ~900 gph pond pump to recirculate it. I would love to hear some advice of filter media, and if the whole idea is even necessary. Ultimately I would like to place both Stealth 250's in the sump, and I'm throwing around the idea of placing my AC110 on the post-filtered side of the sump also. Should result in crystal clear water. right?

To break it down; The water is syphoned down to a 40g, which is divided in half with a gap under the divider. The side it falls into is packed with scrub pads, bioballs, and other media content. from there only the water that has fallen through will make it to the other side of the tank which will contain a 900gph submersible pond pump, 2 Visitherm Stealth 250w's, and an AC110.

Here is a picture of the room I have to work with, before the tank saw water.

I could have the piping between the 2x4's and everything neatly tucked beneath it. I even have plans of incorporating a t-fitting with a valve for easy, non-gravel filtering w/c's. The gravel siphoning is LESS valuable with UG filters, which has made the gravel benefitial to some extent.

Here is the opposing side of the tank, to which I would have this wet/dry system built into, but you get the idea.

Opinions please.

also, a wet/dry would be better for some future plans I have of adding an extended canopy so the fish can willingly jump. And everyone knows what Pacu like to do with pipes that are in their way. It would make reorganzing and gravel vac w/c's easier too, because adding another AC110 would pretty much make both impossible. They are HUGE, and take up a lot of room.

Noise isnt an issue, since its inwall, in the basement. There has been sheetrock put up and sound dampening insulation installed to completely cancel out the noise of the tank since this picture. Again, these are old. I havent been home in about 3 months. I worked on the room just before leaving and never got to taking update pics.

I just dont like the absurd amount of space that the AC110 takes up, off the back of an already large tank.
And it makes the rear much less accessible, which is a problem when the tank is only accessible from the rear. lol

lol sound isnt an issue, but money is. I can get a 40g tank for $40 and I have everything else that I mentioned. the pond pump, heaters, etc.... I know xp3's arent exactly cheap.

Should I maybe drill the side? or would you guys not recommend drilling? its 1/2" glass.

I have a few marine-purpose fittings which would look much better than a pole coming down

What do you mean AC110's take up a large amount of space? Not when compared to a 40g breeder shoved under your tank.

What pond pump do you have and how many gph does it do?
