125g fish tank up and running...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When you move the fish and live media, you'll want to add the fish first and let them produce a very small amount of waste to prevent a die-off from temporary lack of waste. Then add the media to the filter so it has something to process right away. At least, that's what I've always done. Never had a major mini-cycle.

Well, after fiddling with it for about an hour, I've gotten it quieter, but it still does the louder slurping every now and then. I've tried combination's of restricting the drain flow and putting pieces of airline in the holes in the standpipes, and so far this is the best I've achieved. I'll leave it be for tonight, and if I can't stand it tomorrow (or by the end of tonight) I'll have to try something different.

The noise is better, but that occasional increase in sound is still bugging me. I'm fiddling with the ball valve trying to find a better position to reduce the sound. I'll let you guys know if I finally figure it out.

I took a few pics of the left side overflow, the one that is making most of the trouble. The pics aren't very good, sorry. I've also added a bubble disc (hopefully the ray will like to play in it), and since I got tired of an "empty" tank, I tossed some feeders in there. They'll get eaten once the pbass get transferred.

How are the 90's useless? This is the way most non Durso-like standpipes are built.

Anyways, I didn't build it this way. it was built like this by the previous owner. I probably would have changed it, but that would have involved some very delicate cutting inside the overflows, because all the plumbing was glued together.

they do nothing but give you a spot for air to make noise. the pipe to the 90 could be sraight up to the level you want the water. constantly flowing. the 90 causes a siphion and sucks air making noise

Would it help if I cut off one of the 90's, so that there was just a single 90 at the top of the pipe? I don't think I could remove both of them. I don't have any type of saw that could fit in there to cut like that.

They're inside of overflows, so the water level in the tank won't change any, just the water level in the overflow, which I could care less about if the damn thing is quieter.:)

I'll try cutting off one of the 90's tomorrow after work. I'm too tired to bother with it any more tonight.
