I'm back... With questions! :D

So convict360 convict360 has gotten me hyped about doing a nano planted (hubby also likes the idea of trying it with a tiny tank before potentially wasting money on a larger setup) and I was going to use one of my tiny qt tanks for it but my mother in law had a tiny little tank under her house that she said I could have, only problem is it has no lid (isn't that why they made perspex? :p) otherwise it's a nice little tank, a few scratches but otherwise fine.. Now, for my never ending list of questions...

1. Can anyone suggest a nice substrate for planted tanks? I've read about the tropica substrate and am leaning towards that but if anyone has a better suggestion I'd love to here it!

2. Lighting, this is where I get confused, all the PAR and wpg and everything else is a little confusing.. Can anyone give me a link to an article that explains the idea of PAR in "simple" terms? I've read the bit in the planted section (and the various links within) but it feels like I need to be a scientist to understand it all, same with most of the info on plantedtank.net...

3. Co2, can anyone recommend a "cheap" kit that will run a 30ltr happily? I don't mind paying a bit for the actual kit, but would like something cheap to run. NO DIY! It looks so fiddly and confusing so I'm avoiding that road...

4. Is it possible to have a planted tank without fish? I honestly don't know what I could/would keep in a box that small so I'm leaning towards a fishless tank, is this at all possible?

Thanks in advance. :)
If you want fish, but just don't know what can fit in a tank like that, then just get a few rasboras.

I recommend a complete substrate, my favourite is Fluval shrimp stratum.

Lighting, depends on your plant list; what do you intend to grow?

You can rig up a fire extinguisher and regulator cheaply.

Entirely possible to do just plants :) just add ferts as required :)
I'll look into that substrate, thanks!

As for what I want to grow I'm not fully decided on that yet... I would like to try my hand at a red plant or two like the red Ludwigia (sp?) varieties, maybe some lilaeopsis (sp?) for carpet, I'm not 100% yet... Its hard finding plants that won't dwarf the tank... :D

Fire extinguisher is a no go. I won't go into why, its just a no go.

And woot for the fishless tank!!! I can't cram anything into a tank that small. I just can't bring myself to do it. :)

I don't like the idea of cramming them in there... If I could find a fish that only grew to half a centimetre long, with a thin streamlined body I'd be set! Otherwise I think its to small for fish personally.. :)

My hubby won't let me have fire extinguishers. I won't go into why, but that has been the "rule" for about 6 years now. :( Maybe I can convince him that I'm not 17 now?..

30 liters should be enough for a small school. If not, then you could get a few shrimp.
You can't say shrimp would get too big, because convict has them in a tank less than half the size of yours.

Its just a personal preference I guess.

And it's illegal for me to keep freshwater shrimp here... :)

You could always get a betta.
+1 i would say that is sufficient for a betta

Or you can go fishless with ferts and maybe use ammonia and a basic filter to provide nitrate

My last betta was in a 120ltr tank... Do you really think I'd put one in a 30ltr unless I absolutely had to? :D

Plus, from what I've read, most plants like nice flow... Bettas don't...

I think I'll just go fishless until I get the hang of things and can do a bigger tank.. Then I'll go stupid with fish. :P

I might get a 75litre for my betta and loach (especially so i can get some loach buddies)

As for flow my plants and betta are fine with the low flow
