^ if you can break the water surface using the canister output then that will also help with oxygen exchange...
Convict said that I should avoid hob because of gas exchange, which would also let out c02. I'd think a canister with an output above water would do the same thing.
Not sure what to do...

Some people use airstones at night to promote oxygen exchange, as co2 naturally rises at night when plants respire; during the day though, when injecting co2, for plants you want to minimise the co2 gassing off, which happens quicker in agitated water.

A lot of people use canister filters as they filter a large body of water, without disrupting the top of the water.

As Homer mentioned, a good idea is to get a drop checker, then once you dial in the optimal co2, you don't have to worry during the day about oxygen and co2, since both can actually be present in a tank in high quantities at the same time.
