13" male umbee

man that is a stunning fish i have to say that each time i see him. Off the topic but how do you sex umbees and at what size can they be sexed? Cant seem to find it searching

Although I will say looks can be deceiving and a male looking fish can turn out to be female, again just my experiance and would be great for Roliva to add his thoughts.

Sexing umbees can be tough. Partly due to the fact females can have great colors too. Also, some have said due to agression, males have been known to keep subdominant colors, even mimicking the female pattern.

What I did was take away the dominants while the juvenile umbees were growing out. It turned out my male was the second to the bottom of the pecking order out of his five siblings!! The females grew much faster the first 3 or 4 months.

I was lucky and knew the sex around 3.5" TL. Here are some shots to compare to his female sibling when they were around 3-4" (with him being the dominant):

I do have one question Roliva does the line they have going across there body have anything to do with sexing them?
 
that's a an awesome umbee, tis a spitting image of my old umbee....dang! makes me want it back! glass banger?

I think that is just a 'stress' bar. Depending on their mood, can be different at times.
