135g SA "Renewal" Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So even though I have a divider in place, I apparently didn't get it in soon enough. During WC today I noticed that the females tail fin is pretty tattered.

Hoping it will heal up ok. I'll keep an eye on it and keep the water clean. Anything I should look out for in terms of bacterial infection?

Should I just get some Meds for that as well?

I'm hoping the General Cure has beaten the parasites. I'm still soaking their food in an Epsom salt solution. I figure I'll start trying to fatten them up and see what happens.
If it's just torn fins it will heal with clean water and turn up heat add salt she should be fine bro

Thanks!

Here's some pics of my non-cichlid fish in the 135g.

First, my male & female L144, and their progeny (who survived the first few months in a canister filter);

I agree wc's really go a long way to heal fins fast. Any time my fish have torn fins I do a wc and in 2 days max they are good as new.

Beautiful female. Love the tank pics, your aquascaping is so natural looking. I really want to go with a natural look in my tanks this summer when a rescape.

Today was a good day! Wife & I ran 16km this morning, then I took her to the nursery and she bought a couple hundred dollars worth of plants & flowers for the garden.

That bought me the entire afternoon to do fish stuff while she toiled in the soil!

I did a 80% WC and netted out the two smaller GT's. They're in my QT tank with my new hoplo undergoing treatment for parasites. I put the 2 Bleeding Hearts back in the big tank. I figured they'd have a swimmers chance in a 135g with 3 GT's and no chance in a 15g with 2 GT's...

Once I refilled the tank I noticed a change in behaviour from my big male (by big I'm talking 4 to 4.5" - so it's relative), he started dragging the almond leaves around organizing them how he wanted. He's never shown interest in them before.

Then he and his two remaining ladies spent about an hour exploring the tank together - never more than 6 to 8 inches apart.

And just now I noticed he has started doing the shimmy shimmy shake with whichever female won't swim away from him. He's ready, they're not.

I know 3 is not supposed to be a good number for cichlids but I am hoping this works. If it does I'll be thrilled. And if they accept the 3rd female after she gets fattened up I will be more thrilled, but if not I'll keep this trio as long as possible.

Last resort is I dedicate the tank to just a pair.

Either way, I can't really lose.

A fine example of a GT. Wow!

In the last few days the dynamic of the tank has changed.

Previously the Male, Bruce, spent most of his time chasing the two females.

Recently the two females have each staked out half of the tank (opposite halfs, fortunately). They have both gotten a little darker with some striking white patches (almost like the bars on either side of the lateral spot have reversed colour, like a film negative).

Bruce spends most of his time on the right side of the tank with the female who appears to be a day or two ahead of the other. The right side female is just starting to show the beginnings of her ovipositor.

Bruce and her have dug a pit and I've seen Bruce cleaning the rocks. They've done a little shimmying, but not as much as I'd expect so I think we're still days or maybe a week away from anything happening.

On occasion Bruce heads over to the left side of the tank and instead of chasing the other female, they just kind of hang out.

It's almost like the tank is at its most calm, most peaceful?

Is it the calm before the storm or will this dynamic (a trio), succeed?

We'll see. I still have another female and male in my Hospital tank. I'm gonna get rid of the male this weekend probably. I'll hang onto the female a bit longer though and see how this all shapes up.

Do you think he will try and fertilize both females eggs?
It's good things have calmed down and that both girls have their own sides of the tank. I would think that should keep aggression down through most of the spawning period.

Will the other female eventually be added back in the main tank with the others?

In a 135, with only juveniles like these I would have high confidence in it working out. It sounds like he is doing well with sharing the females, and yes if the both lay, the chances are he will fertilize both batches of eggs. It helps that they are on opposite ends of the tank, it sounds like the more dominant female will most likely lay first, then the second female. Good Luck!

Thanks for the comments guys/gals!

I have heard that in a harem setup the male can & will spawn with multiple females simultaneously.

My plan originally was to add the 3rd female back. My experience with other cichlids in general suggests that "3" is not the magic number as the odd fish out is often chased and stressed to death.

When I aquascaped this tank I did it in such a manner that there are caves and hideaways at each end of the tank, with the middle being somewhat open. The entire reason for this was to encourage spawning at one end so the other fish in the tank could have an area of refuge at the other end.

Here's the thing though; my tank has plenty of room now when none of the fish are over 6". I. An already tell that Bruce is going to be a big, thick fish, and if the females do ever get to 7", which is not unreasonable to expect, my 135 will get cramped if two of them have to share a 3' section while the others are spawning.

If I have simultaneous spawns it could almost ensure the 3rd female has no where to run or hide.

I'll be watching this closely and hoping this arrangement works. In which case I will not add the 3rd female back.

If it doesn't work I may just remove another female and keep a pair. In fact the more I think about it the more this seems the better solution unless I can upgrade to a bigger tank sooner than later.

I'll post photos this weekend. I'd also like to get some video of my WC system. I'm quite happy with it.

I'd love to see pictures of your wc system!
I went back through this thread and reread everything. Somehow I think I just skipped to the end before. Lol
I love how you have set this tank up.

I wanted to ask, how the gts have been doing with the plants?
My husband ordered the new light for me, I went with beamswork. And we are thinking about ripping the plastic plants out and going with live when I rescape.

I'll get some pics/video of that this weekend.

The GT's were fine with plants until today. Came home today and in their excavation efforts a couple clumps if valisnaria have become uprooted. That's it though. Very minor.

Came home just now and female 1's tube is out.

Not sure if that captures it.

Here's Bruce. He seems to have darkened up on the lateral spot;

Every now and again they go into the pit they have dug and do the body wave against one another. Would not be shocked if they lay eggs tomorrow or Sunday.
