135g SA "Renewal" Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, so I worked from home today and set myself up so I could watch my tank from a distance of about 12 to 15 feet away. Far enough that the fish don't notice me and act more natural.

Some observations:

1. Bruce is either eating, looking for food to eat, or hanging out with the other female. That's how he spends his time.

2. Leia has excavated a massive pit with smaller pits inside the pit. She moves the wriggler from small pit to small pit, all within the confines of the big pit.

3. She'll charge half way across the tank to take a run at Ventress (the second female GT). Then dart back to the pit.

4. She does not bother Bruce. He can come close to the pit and Leia will pop out, see it's him, then relax and go back to whatever she is doing. Bruce has not tried to enter the pit though. I think he knows that there is only "responsiblity" waiting for him in there, so he avoids it.

When I approach the tank the three GT's kind of stop what they're doing and watch me. I use my finger as a lure and trace it down the glass to make Bruce get close to the spawning pit, to see if anything will happen, but Leia leaves him alone.

I don't think these guys have the strongest pair bond. I don't know if that's a bad thing though? Because Bruce seems preoccupied with trying to get the second female to spawn, he leaves Leia alone.

Because there are no other real threats in the tank it appears that they don't feel the need to terrorize everything else.

So far so good. But even so, yesterday Leia wasn't leaving her pit at all. Now she'll leave it to chase Ventress. The aggression could still kick up a notch, but so far so good.

It's actually pretty harmonious at the moment.

Fingers crossed.

Sounds like they're doing pretty great for their first spawn. I don't think GTs are really known for their tag team efforts are they?

Something new, "Are you sure you want to like this post?" hahaha

They made me think about it

It may not be a bad thing. The girls might even prefer it this way so he isn't pestering one too much. Haha
I wonder if the males always avoid taking care of the wigglers or if it's a new dad thing?

I find it interesting how they behave when they think no one is watching. If my old baby camera/monitor still worked I'd set it up to spy on them. Lol

I can't wait for more pictures!

I just walked into this after work. I'll be watching the tank closely tonight to see if this affects the dynamic.

That's awesome man, so how is the female that was in quarantine ?

Alright, so Leia & Bruce are parading the swarm of fry around the tank. Bruce seems to have given up trying to spawn with Ventress and is taking his fatherly duties quite serious.

In fact, Ventress is nowhere to be seen... I just fed the tank and she has not made an appearance so I have to assume she is in hiding. I'll have to monitor this.

Alex, the female and male that are in QT seem to be doing okay. Her tail fin is healing up. It was nipped worse than initially thought, but it is healing. I've actually listed them both for sale on a local forum. Sort of a shame really, that male was the best looking if the lot when I brought them home - but he needs a big tank to call his own. Bruce would dominate him if I tried re-introducing him, I'm sure of it. Bruce is now easily twice his mass. Not much longer, but deeper and thicker.

Haha! My kids call it puffing.
There are so many little fry!

Well, I think I'm gonna have to remove Ventress. She came out of hiding and the two of them went after her. Bruce was the worse offender. Ventress' dorsal fin is shredded and she is pretty scuffed up.

This is another example of wishing I had a 180g instead of a 135g. They're the same length but that extra 6" of width allows for much better aquascaping, which means more caves and places to retreat to.

It's kind of funny, just this morning I was thinking "These guys are really mellow, my convicts were far more vicious". And while I still think that is true, the aggression has really ramped up now that the fry are free swimming. I alluded to this before - I kind of thought it may happen, but then I got hopeful.
