I picked up this gar approx 1-2 months ago.

I believe it was in the early stages of lymphocystis when I received, but since treatment, shows no signs of the virus. There were never any ill effects from it, but I removed one lesion for aesthetic purposes. I have included pictures. This fish has been with many other fish of different families (clown knife, oscars, etc) and those fish have NOT contracted the virus.

Quoted from Dr. Adrian Lawler:

Lymphocystis does show some host-specificity, i.e., each strain (or species) of lymphocystis can infect only its primary host fish, or some additional closely related, fish.

Gar is currently feeding on Sally's silversides.

Anyone?

If you dont mind me asking, why are you getting rid of it?

He keeps trying to eat my other fish, and I do not wish to continue housing him alone. When I ordered him/her, I specifically asked for an 6-8" gar so it could go in the 120 grow-out tank, but when it came in, it was 12" long. I couldn't stand to see it in the tank @ the fish store so I went ahead and bought it. Then he tried to eat some of my fish(despite being well fed), so I put him into a different tank, which is kinda already reserved as a fry growout tank.

I could always bring him back to the store for credit with no problem, but I'd rather see him go to someone who can actually house him rather than the first redneck that walks into the store and sees him.

He's really sweet (for a gar) and hand-feeds without biting. lol He will bite if you stick the tip of your finger in the water, but I have some red coralife gloves for that.

Ah ok, well ill be honest if it wasn't for that virus I would take him off your hands, I'm a couple hours away, but the biggest issue is I don't want to risk getting the Florida gar I have already got getting infected. Good luck though I am glad you are trying to do the best for the gar.

I don't blame you at all. Even though he doesn't show symptoms anymore, I still added it to the thread so there would be no unexpected surprises.

bump

Free bump for ya, glad to see you are being upfront, the article I read on it said that the virus runs its course over about 4 weeks and then is gone, still glad to see you are not leaving any one a chance st a surprise down the road

Thank you, sir. Where about are you located in La?
