Hi all, my first post in this section and my first flowerhorn. Got it as a rescue from Tampa about 4 years ago. The prior owner said it's low grade or some such. It doesn't have much red but IDK much about them. I got it at about 8" and it is now about 14", maybe more, hard to say. It lived in various ponds and tanks and has been in one of our 4500 gal for about the last 1.5-2 years.

It'd give problems to almost any other fish in a 240 gal but in 4500 gal it's been a complete opposite, very mellow. Our 10"-12" umbee used to dominate it a bit but now it appears that it does.

Here is a video of the fish:

Our only FH has peacefully passed on. I am assuming from age as it must have been around 10 years old. Is this their usual life span? It's been with us for the last 6-7 years, a rescue from Mike of Tampa Bay from back in 2012-2013, when it was around 6"-7", if memory serves.

Final measures are 14" long tip to tip and 7" tall. The tattering of the fins was done post-mortem courtesy of tank mates in a 4500 gal.

You definitely took amazing care to this fish. 10 years sounds like a full live span for a flowerhorn like that. I would be proud of yourself.
Yeah 10 yr. for a Flowerhorn, esp. in a community tank, is pretty impressive, you done good TBTB. With newer generations nowadays one is lucky to get 4 or 5 yrs.

A rescue from Sabrina of Naples, FL. Bought as a parrot cichlid at 1" about 5-6 years ago at an LFS in Cape Coral, FL. Turned out to be a short-body flowerhorn. Named Bruce. Had babies with a female but was rough on her, so both Sabrina let both go. Kind of square fish, 6 inches x 6 inches and an attached tail.

Red devils and Atan the midas gave Bruce a hostile reception in a 240 gal, but in an 1800 gal he has been alright, now for a few weeks:
