Looking awesome! And that canister filter looks awfully familiar... How are you liking it so far? Does it have enough flow for you?

I agree, go with pool filter sand. Its cheap and easy, and will help to avoid problems in the future. Plus detritus collects on top of it, rather than dropping down through the cracks and settling underneath. I have to do way more maintenance on my rock-bottom tanks than my sand-bottom tanks.

I wanted to do sand in my RES tank, but everything I read warned against it. I have read that they can ingest it and get it compacted in their system killing them.

Have any of you guys used sand for any period of time with success? My tank with large rocks is gross all the time. I would love to make the change.

i love the filter..i wouldnt be able to justify spending more than what i did on a fluval or something like that because this thing works perfectly fine.really quiet..im glad i trusted you and went with that one because now i might have to get this filter for my other tanks...thanks conner!

idk man i dont see how it could get compacted.i say just go for it because i would guess theyd be able to pass it without any issues.they are pretty much going to eat whatever they can fit in their mouths so id rather it be just sand than anything else.and its SUPER easy to keep clean.i had gravel and rocks in their old tank and it was incredibly hard to keep clean.all i do with the sand is just wave the net in the water and mix it up and net the water clean of big material and my filter does the rest

I've had sand for about a year or so now, she eats (along with anything else bit size) and it just comes out the other end.

OK, one more question then. Anyone have any luck with plecos in with their RES? I put to babies in hoping they could hide from him, but nope! Both gone in hours.

And your pond looks awesome. I wish I had the space to do the same.

i wouldnt dare put plecos in there...my res are terrors.anything that enters the pond is devoured within minutes, brutally. ive been wanting to try a bigger fish but idk if they would eat it piece by piece or not...thanks btw :) got any pics of yours?

plecos are a hit or miss. I had one with my razorback musk for 6 months or so. Then one day he decided I wasnt feeding him enough. I tried to get another a just a month and half ago. no good there. but then petsmart had the 1 dollar sale on all algae eaters. So far my Chinese algae eater is still alive.
