Eat more walleyes! ;)

walleyes are so abundant, there is really nothing that special about them. I've always wanted to get some sauger or saugeyes to keep. I'm going to import some European Zander sooner or later, they should be pretty cool.

The large mouth bass, is and has to be one of the ugliest, non descript fish there is. There is nothing to write home about, its like having hamburgers and fries. For the north american fish junkies, have you seen a coosa bass? Now that is a cooler looking native that is, however not mentioned. Closely related to the small mouth bass

Be careful with importing zander since zander is prohibited species in few states. They were cool fish through and personally I believe that they are suitable sportfish for the lakes where the walleyes cannot reproduce.

Yea these "green carps" are boring sportfish IMO. At last they are thriving in heavily developed lakes with no habitats for other fish to reproduce.

yes, I agree, and thanks for the tip. I looked over the guidelines and see that walleyes are illegal to possess in california, but not sauger, and zander are not included. I can see there are many loop holes in the list, time for an update. I can think of a few to add on and a few to take off the list.

I'm with ya on the LMB,very ugly fish, and I usually like ugly fish.

exactly my point, I have a very good understanding of the salmonidae group as a whole, as do you.

So if its just the different runs that we're trying to manage, then its not considered extinction at all. This is all just labeling and lobbying done by sports fisherman and know it all advisors with fish and game.

The same "runs" can be re-created, or created, with stocks from all around the world. All the salmons in the great lakes are man made, and actually breed in the tributaries. They also do not always die after spawning. And also mand made, fish and game made strains of steelheads, skamania, are also created, different "runs" for sport fishing, with really no regards to biodiversity or eco-balance. In Mihicigan where I grew up, everything from a sucker, to bowfin, were always left on shore to die, because it was "stealing their bait"

Like you said, the invasive introductions were made by the fish and game to begin with, introduced rainbows for game, and "managed fishery" that took out the cutthroats and golden trouts.

Did you know that datnioid pulcher cannot be found in almost any bodies of water in Thailand or Vietnam now due to the over demand on them? They're not protected...of course we only care about the sea turtles and dolphins on our shore.

Your statements are true for the Great Lakes population (South American too) of Salmon as well as other populations around the world. However in California it is not that simple, restoring runs with fish farmed fish is not nearly as successful as allowing the native runs to spawn on their own. One big problem (there are more) is all the smolt from all the Central Valley rivers bottle neck in the Delta and are slammed by large schools of Stripers and Largemouths that greatly reduces these populations form the start. If these run go extinct that is a huge industry and fishery lost for the entire state of California which is a huge deal and to think that we'll they won't be extinct is missing the point entirely for California.

There are still healthy populations of Cuttrhoats and Goldens in the high Sierra's and a couple other places. I actually think it would be great if Fish and Game farmed and stocked these California natives instead of Browns, Rainbows and Brook Trout.

I had heard that Datnoids were in serious trouble in South East Asia. The Datnoids could use some serious Fisheries Management whether it is fish farms, marine/aquatic preserves etc... Just allowing these fisheries to waste away is not confronting the challenge though, especially when we have got quality fisheries biologist that could slow or reverse these trends. Which is something you may want to think about.

I'm a fan how Largemouth Bass look. Florida strains with there diamond pattern down the lateral line. To me they look similar to a be a smaller green cross of some kind of grouper and a Nile Perch. They have got originality points in my book.

well, the snakeheads are apprently incapable of eating everything in its path like portrayed in hollywood

The first Hollywood portrayals of Snakeheads were ridiculous. They are an apex predator though. They belong in aquariums in North America not natural waterways. If the owner cannot get rid of them fillet them up (or give them to somebody that will) or use them for fertilizer.
