ok so I am planning on setting up a 150 gal not sure of exact stocking but for the most part will be an Oscar or two and severums. But before anything I want to nail down my filtration. So far I have been given a couple of option by different LFS that I have been pricing the tanks and cabinets from. Please I would like any and all advice on the following options the main concern is water conditions I want it clear and healthy as possible then being ease of maintenance. Rally looking forward to staring this hobby with my3 year old son who is super excited about this. I had O's and other aggressive fish over 15 years ago (maybe more) So I am basically a newbie.

OPTION 1 - Two EHEIM 2217's
OPTION 2 - One fluval fx6
OPTION 3 - One fluval fx6 and an aqua clear 110

Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated.

Option 3 would be my pick but instead of an ac110 I would make my own sump

And if you go that route it's easy to add another ac110 later if your bio / waste load gets higher as the fish grow.

In general though I don't like 1 filter systems. If you run only an fx6 it's easy to clean it too well and get rid of too much beneficial bacteria and cause a crash, so clean the fx and ac on alternating weeks.

I like two filter set up as well and to be honest I really don't understand a sump set up only that its wet dry and I think I would need an over flow tank which probably wouldn't work cuz its going to be in the living room (wife...need I explain more). Its really confusing cuz each legs has there own opinion one says eheim is the best and another says fluval and so on. I kind of think each one is going to push what ever filter type they will make the most profit on and not what would actually work best I want super clear and healthy water

So then fx5/6 and ac110 :) Like yoimbrian said, you can always add an extra ac110 down the road should you need to

With that set up what size water changes do tpu guys think would be acceptable ? Also what would be an over filterarion set up loke an fx6 and say a 2217 ? Or is that just total over kill ?

how about 2 AC 110'S and that 2217($139 ON AMAZON) ...and then you have all sorts of flow and should be plenty of bio...all for the price of a new fx 5/6,, just a thought ...good luck &happy fishkeeping:popcorn:

2 2217's would work if it's all fish. I had 2 2217's on my tank, but with a bunch of surface plants, it was new, lots of algae and just slime growing and falling off the surface plant roots like dust whenever they were disturbed. So, I added a 2262 to the two 2217's, and it's clean now. If I were you, I'd just save the trouble, get a 2262 to start with, instead of the 2-2217's. Just in case. My tank is a 125 Gallon.

What is the difference with the fx6 and the 2217s in terms of maintenance ? And flow I mean I know what is listed on the internet in the specs what do does everyone else feel as far ease and how often each would have to be cleaned

Ps all of this advice is much appreciated keep it coming !
