150 gal setup & filtration advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 180g with an fx6, a 2262 and an ac110, 20 or so juvie fish in it for now. You could consider the 2260 or 2262 in place of the fx6. The eheims are quieter and will likely last longer, though more $$. I keep the 110 for running floss and if I need to add carbon etc. The tank is still new less than 2 months since setup and for now I am running the sponge, purigen then floss in the 110.

i would go with the fx6 and the 110. i love both of these filters and have this set up on a 125. it works great.

I am not sure what the terms mean sorry but I want to learn this stuff before I dive in "floss" etc.

How long does it take to clean the fx6 and how often do u do it.

it takes me less than 30 mins to clean mine. the firs few times that you do it it may take a little longer, but once you get you a system down, it goes quick. i only have to clean mine every 3 weeks or so. BTW floss is basicly pillow stufing. in fact, that is what most of us use since it is so cheap and extremely effective at polishing your water. dont buy it from your LFS they will charge you 15 bucks for somthing you can get at JoAnns for 5.

I clean my FX5's (the 4 I have running on my 2 different tanks) about once every month or so. It isn't difficult, per say, but it takes some time - especially if you are reusing the pads (like I do most of the time).

The AC110 takes about 2 minutes to clean, maybe less if you keep a spare sponge block handy. I clean those every 2-3 weeks.

I really like the idea of the FX6 and the AC110 (though you could save a lot of money initially by picking up a used FX5 for around $150). With this filter set-up you would be able to easily maintain both filters - cleaning the AC110 more frequently, which would likely decrease the frequency you would have to clean the FX5/6. Both are workhorse filters as well. Great for big tanks.

wow thank for all this info ! I think I will go with the fx6 and the 110. Quick question about stocking I was planning on 1 or 2 Oscars and possibly some combo of the following severum, Dempsey , terror , acara and maybe a cat (son really likes the giant bumble bee...hes only 3 but really excited) no more than 4 or 5 fish. the tank is 150 gal high 48x24x30 not he 150 gal long. would I be over stocking ?

stocking wise, that is gonna be pushing it a bit. wouldnt put more than 3 maybe 4 fish of that size in that tank. all of them get around 10in or so full grown. as far as compatibility, someone else could elaborate on that a bit more. i dont really deal with the SA side of the cichlid house lol.

cool I guess an Oscar a sev or two and a jd would be ok right ? would it make a difference if I went with a 150 long instead of the 150 high ?

for cichlid i dont thinkit will matter but i may be wrong. i dont have much experince with these fish. now if it were african cichlids, then absolutly not. you could get a hell of a school going with africans in there. say 75 fish or so?
