they have topfin 150 gallon tank on sale at pets mart for $400.00. do you think it is worth it? i think it is what you call a tall tank i am not sure of the lenght but it looks like 48inches long about the same as 55 gallon.
i was thinking about stocking with Nimbochromis Venustus

don't overpay for a tank at petsmart. that is just the tank itself for 400? for that much, you should be able to find a complete setup with stand on craigslist

i dont think its a bad price myself personally, about average. 5 years ago i paid 300 for a reef ready 90. that was a deal at the time.

you can probably save a 100 dollars if you go to craigslist, but you have to be vary careful to make sure you dont get one that leaks, so check the seams.

hmmm. that depends.

if you are like me and like brand spanking new stuff, big tanks are expensive brand new. Personally, if I am setting up a big tank I dont want someone elses used stuff.

having said that, my Aqueon 150 was $440 Canadian brand new, and thats in canadian dollars, so $400 US is a bit steep IMO.

the dimensions on the 150 tall are 48x24x30 tall. basically, a giant cube.

if you must buy new, i would shop around. i recently saw a 40 gallon breeder at petsmart for just the tank that was 89 bucks. it seems to me just from my browsing the store that tanks are extremely marked up at petsmart and petco

Comparing new prices to used prices is just silly...

In my area a 125 gal (72" x 18" @ 21" tall) with stand, glass tops and lights can be found for $500 USD (if you shop around)...

The 4' 150 gal is a bit of an akward size. I have a 4' x 2' x 2' 120 tal (same tank but 6" shorter) and even with my long arms reaching from the top front to the rear bottom is a long reach. The 2' front to back allowd for extensive rock/decor... but to fully utilize the 30" of height for bottom dwelling fish you really have to stack the rock/decor pretty high.

I completely admit I know next to nothing about African Cichlids, but at a glance the fish you want to stock in it looks like they would prefer more floor space and a longer tank than all that height...

PetSmart around here sells a 120g (6'x18"w for $289) I don't think that $400 is worth it.

yeah, thats the problem with tanks over 125g

the glass size goes from 3/8th of an inch to 1/2 inch and the price (and weight) goes way up.

they make the whole tank out of thicker glass and its way more expensive..

you can buy a complete 125 new for 500? thats not bad for new. and yes, he is completely correct in saying that getting the taller tank will waste space. venustus as well as most all other africans i can think of would benefit more from a longer tank than a taller. it will really waste a lot of gallon space by getting such a tall tank. also, that tall of a tank makes maintenance a PITA
