1500 gal fbg tank, new setup for my monsters!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd agree or more drains. I have been redesigning my filtration and I am putting in a "settling chamber". I was playing around with flow to and through the system. I've decided that with about 2000 gph flowing into the chamber I'm doing the drains at 2"x 2. Mine will be setup as a syphon drain so if I do get more "flow" to it it'll be able to handle it plus some. Same with my "remote" wet dry 1 1" in 2 1" out 600 gph flow rate.
The filters will be placed above the tank so basically they are gravity driven. I dont believe i will have an issue as is but i did think the same thing that u guys are saying about increasing the size of the drain bulkheads. I will be running dc pumps so i can adjust the flow if it is too much or add on another bulkhead in the middle.

The filter looks good, but aren't you going to want the outtakes to be large than the intakes?

The intake will be pressurised by wont, whereas drains wont be?

So the drains will need to be larger?

Not sure for sump, but on my ultima/reeflo combo the intakes need to be larger than returns otherwise back pressure will damage the pump. At least those are the directions from reeflo. But maybe closed loop is different open loop.

It should always be that way, if not you are putting too much strain on the pump. Its like McDonald's they started using those massive straws in the shakes because its easier on the sucker.....

The filters are discharging by free flow. They are gravity driven once the water goes thru the filter. The pump pulls the water from the drains then pushes it up to the top of the filter where it then gets dispersed over the floss drip plate then over the lava rox. Finally draining back into the tank. The filters will be sitting above the tank off the side of it. Once they are in place it will explain alot more.

I appreciate that, however I still think you need to change the drains.
The water coming in, is pump fed, so The water coming out is gravity.
The gravity drains are going to be under less pressure than water going in, hence the need for the to be larger?
For example, my current tank has 2 x 2" drains, by gravity, and 1 x1.5 return by pressure.

I am going to see how it comes out. Need be I'll add anther 1" drain to help out. Once its up and running I'll be able to make the necessary adj. I have the ability to adjust the flow. Im hoping it being such a spacious area will allow those two 1" to do the job well. The reason i went with 1.5" intakes is due to the vast area that the water will be spread over.

I appreciate everyone's input. I take it all constructively. Past exp from my fellow hobbyists is greatly appreciated! Don't be afraid to mention/state something. Anything that any sees that i should or could change i sincerely will take into consideration!

So i picked up the tank yesterday. What a big ass tank! Never thought it would be this big but in person its always more then on paper! I got the drains done. One of the pumps attached since the other im presently using. All the filter stand arr biult and very sturdy. Filters are filled with lava rox as well. 4 bags in each. Auto water swap attached but will connect tomorrow. I wasn't able to get as much as i needed done yesterday since the tank was made over an hr away from home and we had to take out the front door area with a part of thw frence to "roll" it in place then rebiuld the fence again so that was an extra 2 or so hrs wasted but this morning i was able to get stuff done too. Will add more pics as i prog. Message_1532887118914.jpg Message_1532887093056.jpg Message_1532887053510.jpg Message_1532887013064.jpg h

I’ve never dealt with such a massive tank before but my 225g is filtered by a 75g sump and I still think I could use an Ultima for additional filtration. I would definitely consider adding more filtration and turn over but I have no idea what your stocking it with.

Im running a drip system as well so that will aid in any extra filtration that may be needed. Also the im not adding a bunch of massive fish. Two are 2 ft the rest are smaller. Total of 18 fish with 4 being t.s. sd and 5 polys that are 12" to 14" and x3 plecos L014 L024 L025 that are 8" - 10" each one. Not looking on adding much more just want to have enuf room for them to swim around. Im using x2 of those filters plus drip at 2 gals/hr. I too have never dealt with such a big tank so we will all learn together.
