I'm starting up a 1500 gallon saltwater tank and looking for ideas on heating. If a hot water heater for a home is the way to go then that's what I will do but looking for ideas. Hope I am in the right place . I am new to the site.

Welcome to mfk.
Well set the house thermostat to about 74F, and let the pumps and reef lighting do the rest.

Any household heater, will have too much copper, for safe saltwater use. You will need a marine stainless steel.

It is in a basement that stays about 62-65 degrees year round. I am in the process of finishing the basement and was not going to have heat running down there. What is a good heater that will work ?

That tank is going to heat the whole room to with in 5 degrees.
The salt water will corrode the heater thus galvanic cathodic electrolysis.

So your saying I don't need a heater at all? I been looking at the in line heaters . I'm getting led lights so very little heat from them unless the pumps will generate enough heat to heat the water .

If you heat the room. To just below what the pump+lights. Put out.
I have led also at 50 actual watts, plus 60 watt algae scrubber. I have to chill my tank in the summer.
