160 gallon vinyl flooring lined tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very cool idea but unfortunately vinyl will not hold up to water on a long term basis water will damage it it be really cool if you got a year out of it though.

I see no way how water will damage it as long as water does not get to the underside. It had a pretty durable seal on top and if you can walk on it for years, I am willing to bet it will last way more underwater. Next step is build one for the snapping turtle, that will be a test. Already have the glass and wood waiting just need more silicone and some more vinyl sheets. But I got pulled over today for a crack windshield so that projects on hold haha.

Ill take some more pics of the 160 tmw, so for now Ill show you my retired 330gal. Its in storage now, only peice I kept was the dual plexi windows bolted to the frame. I tiled the front, this pic dont show it as I did it 6 months later.

Have worked in the Bar/ Restaurant business for over 20 years, a lot of kitchen areas I have come across have vinyl flooring (albeit heavy duty stuff).
I have seen them take years of punishment, kitchen traffic, spills both hot and cold, the only thing that would really do damage to the surface would be chefs dropping knives,or
marks from the edges of broken crockery dropped on the floor.
Other than that if it is laid right it is virtually indestructable, unless your fish do Gordon Ramsey impressions hahaha!!!

Pretty cool idea. Is this the first ply tank sealed this way? I'm impressed.

That I am aware of yes. I also tried a plywood tile tank with silicone for grout but I busted the glass before I could ever test it so I tossed it.

One thing cool about vinyl is you can make it plain, or make it look like a rock or anything else they offer.

the first one looks like a pond liner. how did you seal around the windows??

About 200 ss bolts nuts and washers with 3m 5200. I had a 180 plywood"pond" that I tested it out on first. It worked so I incorporated it into the 330.

how did you do a plywood tank with tile? what kind of tile did you ise and did you use silicone as the grouting? i've seen a tile pond at my local fish store so now i'm kind of curious

I used glazed ceramic tile, it cant be stone tile, it has to be non pourous on the surface. I siliconed the tile to the plywood, then put silicone in the "grout lines" I made 3/8". There is one HUGE con to a tile tank. HEAVY AS HELL. It was a 4x2x2 ok now iv been lifting weights for 8 yrs, can bench 350 and rack pull 495, It gave me a very hard time when throwing it out when the glass broke even as I pushed it down the driveway on a car jack haha.
