17 inch Jardini

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im considering a jar eventually. been doing research on them for a long time. i own a silver, so i only see aro's as peaceful topdwellers. so its hard for me to imagine a species of aro to be able to wipe out all its tankmates. most likely this is how you are also. heres how you should look at it though:

"arowana"s are not a group of fish all their own, but much rather its just a name for a select few out of a larger group known as boney tounged fish. the word ''arowana'' is really just added to boney tounged fish around the world that look similar, but they arent the same. arowanas are closey related to several species of fish such as arapimia, african butterflies, and elephant noses (i think). so in other words, some "arowana"s may be calm like african butterflies, or natural born killers like arapimia, because they are all in the same family of fish.

this is how i look at it at least

I had a silver too. and i kept it with german rams, discus, and cardinal tetras just fine.

My lil Jar that i've had for a month now is starting to show his true self. He's killed several tank mates (cory cats).

--"arowana" are under the boney tongue family,(Osteoglossidae) which includes arapaimas and butterflies. and it's true, there is no "arowana" group. Arowana is casually used to apply to all the monster fish that have the "dragon look" with the 2 feelers, etc...

but keep in mind that classifications are based heavily on physical characteristics and not always behavioral characteristics. so u cannot predict much about a species' behavior based on the Family.

--it's kind of like the Charchin family which includes little neon tetras. But in the same family, it also includes piranhas as well. it would inaccurate to make the deduction that, "since neons are peaceful community fish, then piranhas are peaceful community fish too because theyre in the same family."
big mistake....

Wow! I thought this thread was dead and gone a long time ago but just so everyone knows the Jardini is pushing 20 inches and the 2 silvers are sitting at about 15 inches each and are growing really slow they are fed shrimp every other day they are all pigs and live pretty well together they have brief fights when being fed but other then that there all pretty chill I was told the Jar. was going to mutilate the 2 silvers but it never happened I even set up another tank to seperate them but now im thinking about turning it into a discus tank there are pictures of the big Jar. in the photo lounge somewhere if you want to see him but thanks for the interest folks!
