I am thinking of the amount of glass in contact with the wood, not the thickness of the wood. There will only be 1 inch of overlap, that's what got me thinking.

I have not yet done a wood/acrylic tank, but I have 3 sheets each 8 foot long 1 inch thick in the garage just waiting on me to make plans. I will soon be asking myself just how much overlap I will want. I asked the question so we both do it right... I was tossing around 3 inches at the ends & 2 top & bottom.

I honestly don't know. My length will only be 4' on each window so not really sure. Trying to keep as much of a viewing area as possible on mine. I think I measured my window wrong though. It's actually 21" of viewing area so that gives me 1.5" at top and bottom. I thought it was 22", but I'm kind of winging it here. lol. Never wrong to bring up a good question. Sounds like you have a monster tank vision waiting to happen also. 3 sheets of 8' 1" acrylic. That must have costed more than my entire tank will to build. I need to get a new drill as mine is giving up on me. Going to stock up on some bits also as they seem to like to break often going into this much wood. Ugh, I can't wait til training is over with today, and tomorrow so that I can be actually off work for five days and get to the real business at hand. Tank Building:headbang2

1" of overlap is enough.

As for the tooling gelcoat, yeah it's not that cheap, but neither is epoxy. I don't know about square footage, but a 5gal bucket goes a long way. It depends how thick you put it on, as well.

I sure do, just need a 'place' to put it...

It actually cost quite a bit less than that... Check out this thread, but don't cry ... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163283 Perhaps we can strike a deal :naughty:

Yeah, probably a 5 gal bucket would do the whole thing, but just want to make sure lol. I'm brain storming ideas on quick ways to come up with money in a hurry so that I can get this thing finished before the worst of winter rolls in. Montana=bad winter starting the end of september to the begining of October and runs through april to june depending on how unlucky of a year it is. This year we got 14" of snow the second week of june. Was like 23 F out that week. Short summer. Should have started my build a month earlier, but didn't have the funds yet.

Depends on what the deal is. I can offer you some customized fish skeletal mounts, artwork, and that's about it lol. I've got only about $20 to spend on this project right now. That's going to a new drill probably as mine is quickly dying. Cheap drills can't handle too many projects.

Here's another pic of what the tank looks like as of today.:headbang2 you guys and gals all rock and if you're ever in Montana just let me know you can get the grand tour!!!

I have no need for mounts, have a friend that's a 'tax', & I rarely even use him.

I can sit on these for a while, I likely won't start my project till after I move (like 6-10 months out) & I am planning on using only 1 (or 2) & thought of selling the rest to help pay for the other materials.

We can look at shipping costs when you are ready to buy, remember there is always the "Lil_Stinker lease to own plan", with easy financing available... just PM me when you are ready, we will see if I can help you cut cost at that time. For all we know, shipping from NY may be more than getting it retail close to your place.

Wasn't offering 20, just saying that's all I have for now. I'll be doing some more stuff for money soon. No one here sales acrylic larger than 3/4", and the prices are outrageous. Cheapest I've found it shipped here is around $500.00 for two 2'x4'x1" sheets new.

Hey back off bass! lol, JK. Setting up a tank of this size has about as many considerations and implications as building a house if not more lol.
