Ok, lets put it to bed once and for all

There is a thread in the general section...

Here

Is a 180g (6x2x2) Big enough for a single male Dovii, to live comfortably for life ? Assuming that the fish doesn't have bruises all over it's head and has a mouth full of teeth !

Without sounding like an ass, i'm really not interested in peoples guesses that have never owned a Dovii

So those that own or have owned Dovii, your input would be appreciated

I stand by my opinion. 180 for the "comfortable minimum."

Their territories span a LOT of feet. So that's likely half or more of your room. If you come in that space, they're going to bang on the glass. So unless you have a big pond, they're going to be banging glass and losing teeth. I have heard of them being "trained" to not freak out so bad by the owner being very calm and slow around the tank, and having the tank way from any other traffic. But even the guys with 400+ gallon tanks would be considered too small if you go by the thought that if the fish is banging on the glass, the tank's too small.

I already posted in your other thread. So here is my opinion again.

This is always a topic and always will be.......but I think the reason the majority of Dovii and Umbee on here are in the 20" max range and there are more 17" than that is because the majority keep them in to small of tanks. It's not a surprise that the two larger examples of these two species on this site are kept in very large tanks. Do I think every Dovii would get 24" no but I think there would be a lot more if they were not kept in 180 gal. for life. Not only is there length a factor but water quality and another large factor is these fish are fast powerful and need room. IMO not just enough to turn around.

Also you should ask for people who have larger Dovii not just own them......that can be misleading.

If i was gonna get a dovii or an umbee then i would plan ahead. M plan is for a 240 in a few years and the reason is the dovii and umbee will be fine in it. 180 will be fin for around 3-4 years

Try blinding all sides of the tank by spray painting the back and sides black......................This way the dovii will feel enclosed and comfortable............Seeing only one way out means all sides are protected...............

A 240 isn't going to be that much better than a 180. Same depth (2foot). And that's why most people say the 180 is too small. It is nice for the extra 2 foot swimming length though.

Anyone want to answer why dovii in the wild get much larger than even mels giant? If we're going by dovii not reaching max size as being the determining factor for tank size, 31 inches and 30 pounds is the world record. None in aquariums are reechoing this size.....so if we're going by this, dovii shouldn't be in aquariums.

i really think its all about the water quality. mels dovii is so monstrous because of his rediculous upkeep of his tanks. he changes more water and provides the fish with ample room needed. if you watch his videos you see that his umbee male grew like 10" in like 18 months after the fish was already 12" long which is unheard of growth rate at that size and age of a fish. his male dovii looks to be 26"+ and is still growing and may reach that 30" length someday. also mels male is about 10 years old and who knows how long these monster 30" dovii are living in the wild maybe 20-30 years and the water quality issue may be why the dovii in aquariums arent living long enough to get to that 24"+ mark like mels. i would love to get a 10'x4' tank for a dovii pair and see how big itll get with tons of wc but one can only dream:)
