180 g Acrylic set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone.

I go vinegar heavy. But any mix will work I like about half a gallon in a 5g bucket. Let it soak overnight and scrub with a soft bristle brush. As for the bulk heads id get new. I never reuse them......well I just made a pvc light saber out of one of the old ones lol. Made a pretty cool looking hilt. Anyway I find the seals can leak once they have been used. Safer to get new. The rest can be reused or repurposed.
Test the heater for operation before relying on it to do anything with fish involved. Run it in a bucket of water or a tote just make sure its not touching the sides.
I know you posted some pics on fb but if you can post some close ups of the overflows thatd be helpful. I dont remember how its set up.
should I soak the acryllic sump and bioballs too? What are the benefits of using vinegar over bleach in this case?

Also hell yeah to the saber hilt. Pics or it didn't happen.

Thanks everyone.

Vinegar will eat calcium deposits where bleach will not. Both would be fine to clean with though.

It still looks like plumbing , but it was fun to swing around. Its a 1" bulk head and 1" pipe for the hilt. Its very rudimentary. A 3/4" pipe fits in the 1" for a "blade". Ive started making it look more like a saber. Maybe one day soon I'll "finish" it and post it up.

Looks good!
My overflows in the 180 are like that.....ish. I did 1 full syphon in each one and one emergency in each. It worked fine for the time I had it set up.

After you get the tank cleaned get Novus Acrylic polish. It is a 3 step acrylic polish and get 800-3000 grit sand paper It will look brand spanking new. I have actually taken scratches out with water level drained and fish in tank before. I stand by that stuff its amazing.

You can see some videos online with Novus, but in my own experience it's easy to use and works wonders.

Distilled.
Thank you!

Just purchased the Novus 1,2,3. but now I'm like heckkkk maybe I should just get the wet sandpaper and buff it out while I'm doing the 3 steps. I have access to an orbit sander. Did you do the sanding by hand or with an orbit sander? Did you use a cloth or wool bonnet with the sander for any of the steps?

Be careful with any sander. I used a sander and a cloth bonnet on the buffer. It's kind of easy to "burn" the acrylic. Just go slow and you'll be ok.
