180 Gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The aquarium is 6x2x2. If I bought an arowana for it, would any other fish be able to go in it, or is that only enough room for a single jardini or a single black arowana? Thanks for the help.

you can have tankmates. aros are mianly top water swimmers anyway. get it something bottom or middle dwelling. some tinfoil barbs or pbass. or a spotted/florida gar. or big enough clown loaches, fei feng, and the list goes on.

Hey Ethnics your 150 gallon tank sounds awesome, how bout some pix? would be sweet. Also, did you recieve Mei's aro safely yet? If so, what tank is it in? the 500 and some pix or a new thread to update would be nice as well.

A florida gar isnt going to do well in a 180, maybe for a while, but they are just to stiff.

P-bass also dont seem like a good idea to live out there life in a 180 either.

I may be a noob, but Im just going to say, I would not keep any arowana in a 180 for life. Let alone with tank mate such as p-bass and/or any gar species(except for needlenose gar wich arent true gar and will stay much smaller) Thats just my opinion. :)

attackfish, i didnt call u a noob
gars are very slow growing species, i've had mine for over a year already and the spotted/florida gars grow very slow. im talkin less then 4 inches in a year. its a great fish to have especially in a 2ft wide tank. they are pretty flexable unlike how you said they are stiff. they are not stiff. they jus swim steadly straight looking stiff but they can bend a decent amount. it would take over 3-5 years for the gar to outgrow the 180.

pbass grow about 1" per month for the first year, then slow down dramatically after that. he could keep pbass in his 180 easily for years n years. i didnt say how many, but 1 silver and 2 pbass would be fine. or even a few more til they get bigger.

it almost makes me laugh a bit when i hear noobs talking about "keeping a fish for life". 80% of you guys can not and will not keep a fish for life, trust me. go with what u like now and care for it the best you can. eventually you'll donate it to someone who can care for it for life hopefully.

I know you didnt call me a noob. I was calling myself that.

And I plan to keep my fish for its whole life as i have done with many others. Besides, If I'm going to pay 150 bucks for a black, you can bet im never going to let it go.

The only fish i have ever donated/traded in were Three large Ryukin goldfish that were given to me by my grandparents as they didnt have time for them anymore, and Since I a large enough tank at the time I donated them to a LFS/Pond Supply.

Again, It was just my opinion. Take my words lightly if you havent already.

whatever makes you sleep better at night. but when the day comes, remember me in the back of ur mind. or maybe my words will encourage you to be apart of the 20% that actually keeps them for life.

I'd add some motoro rays and tinfoil barbs, or some silver dollars or birchis.....or just a clown knife. Thats just me.....;) also depending how many of what fish each or the kind of filter system you have set up.

Aros and other constantly swiming species seem to be a lot happier in a longer tank. Something on the order of 8 feet. So a 240 or 300 would probubly be a lot better. Our 8" Pbass and our 12" silver aro are inseperable buddies. But the best methoud that I've found (compatability wise) is to raise a group of fish together rather than continually adding and removing fish.
