with some good aqua scape I think you would start to like it.
I did consider using it. It took a long time for me to decide to go with the coral skeletons. But, like I said I like that look better.
My daughter has a 29 gallon FOWLR. It looks pretty good. However, since you mentioned good critters, bad critters can also tag along. They can be a pain in the but to get rid of also. Aiptasia came with hers along with a butt load of bristle worms. Some folks say bristle worms are ok. I don't know myself. My daughter hates them. She actually had a nightmare about them eating her precious little clownfish!
Anyway, since I am well aware of the benefits of the live rock I will more than likely add it to a sump. Probably in the 50 gallon range.
