I was planning on getting a 180g tank. What would be a good filter for it?

a wet dry or canisters im thinking of getting lifeguards filters...

if space and budget permits i would suggest you to use a sump as filtration system. ;)

Do you have a preference? if not then the advice will be all over the place. Otherwise just go with the Fluval Fx5 (canister) -see the other threads as to why

really depends on the space, money, and what your exact goals are...

agreed, what fish or bioload do you plan on housing?

i tend to over filterate, since i currently house an aro and ray in my 180g.

Eheim Pro 3 (use an additional layer of filter floss) or Eheim 2250. If heavily stocked: Eheim 2260.

To use Ducati's words: -see the other threads as to why

There have been threads on these filters as well as on longest-lived equipment (use search option). All in all, Eheim provides good filtration, high reliability, and best longevity and thus best value for your money of you plan on keeping the tank for a while. The FX-5 seems to be a decent filter, however, its long-term reliability still has to be determined.

big wet/dry would be good..or a couple canisters

If you ask 10 people about the kind of filter to use , youll get at least 5 different answers. I have a 180 with an Amiracle wet/dry on it. Its been running for 8 yrs without any problems. The pump is a Little Giant 1200 gph. A lot of what kind of filter to use is answered by what kind of fish you put in the tank.
