ah, but the FX5 is $150 more.

Than what ? please explain....please dont say Eheim because that is not true or you found a hyper inflated price some where...the FX5 run from anywhere $240 to $290 on average
Ebay is less

Wow! There's seems to be a lot more options than I thought. I don't know. I live on my own and money is pretty tight. I've seen the Fluval FX5 around a lot lately and it says it can be used up to a 300g tank. I would like something that can be alittle more than twice the power for my tank size. So when I get the 180g tank, I'd like to get some thing that is recommended for a 400g tank. Is there a difference between a wet/dry filter vs. a sump filter? And the Eheim I know are canister filters...are they still effiecent for a tank this size?

i am currently setting up my 180 gal tank. what i'm using is a CR3000 and a mag drive 24 plus a 24W Aqua UV. the CR3000 is for up to 400 gal tank some says it is up to 440 gal tank. i took the advantage almost 2 months ago before CPR raised it's price wich was totally much more. If you have some savings i might suggest getting the same since it will benefit you in the long run. look at it this way... cleaner and healthier fish = zero to minimal loss of expesive fish. if you are on a budget i would suggest 2 Rena xp3 on both end of the tank. My friend has 180 and uses 2 rena xp3. with regards to the fx5 i haven't used it but seems a lot of people agree to it being excellent. you can get the CPR CR3000 for around $400 w/o pump which hurts the pocket, xp3 you can get for $99 each, if you're luck you get free shipping, FX5 runs around $250-300 on the net but consider shipping and hopefully no tax if it's out of state. economically speaking it would go for xp3 or fx5 but that's only my opinion. :)

And the Eheim I know are canister filters...are they still effiecent for a tank this size?

Eheim 2260 is rated for tanks up to 400 gal.
Eheim 2250 is rated for tanks up to 260 gal.

I am currently running an Eheim 2080 (=Pro3) on my 220 gal, it's rated for tanks up to 315 gal. No problems, just add some extra filter floss.
