So I am about to purchase a 180 gallon tank (72x24x24) and I would like to stock it with 6-8 RBPs. I went diving in nearby lakes and walked riverbeds to find driftwood...I have no clue how I'm going to sanitize the wood seeing as they are too big to put in a pot and boil the water.

Also, bought a bunch of silk plants to go with an Amazon theme.

As for filtration...

Fluval FX5 Canister (950 gph) or DIY sump?

Note: No experience in sumps or DIY filtration.

Think even if you get fx5 you need another filter . I have 150 g and i have fx5 and a tray filter with 1500lph head and another powerhead with water polisher . I think you need to turn water over 10x ish . The bogwood sounds cool could you not just hose and rinse it off with bit of soapy water ?

Right now all the wood is sitting outside in the sun, I could hose it down and scrub it with soapy water, but how would that do compared to using Hydrogen Peroxide or boiling it in water?

I cant see any reason why after you clean it you cant pour kettle over it ? If it looks nice and clean try it out with a few fish you dont mind losing foe a week until satisfied then add the monsters in
I am probably not the ideal guide though as i hate to pussy foot around i prefer to steam in and risk all !!!!!!!!!!!!

go with a DIY sump there not hard to build at all i built one for my 150 gallon tank (72x20x24) and it was my first large tank so even for a beginer there not hard to build

and a fluvals actual flow after media is only about 600 gph while its enough i got a sump flowing 750 gph with better bio. filtration than an FX5 for about the same price thats pump media and everything else to build and set up the sump

im in the middle of my own diy wet dry build. The only problem im having so far is I think im making a few guys mad because of all the questions. Basically there answer is always " you got , go do it." If you dont 'got it' read a few threads on here and you will. as far as the driftwood, like Just said , just through it in and add fish , if they die , find a way to boil. I work in a restaurant and thats how i access pots large enough for my wood (lol) and rocks. Oh by the way its for my 180 , its my first 'big tank' so i understand the anxiety.

Update: the tank I am going to purchase has 2 overflow boxes in the back corners of the tank. Is it possible to create a filter system that combines the 2 overflows into 1 sump?

Ok, so before I head to Menards and buy PVC pipes, what size and length should they be and how big of a sump do I need? (mind you I am keeping 6-8 RBPs)

Also, is there such thing as too much filtration?
