is there a way to tell the sexes apart? like color? and should i be doing the assorted or should i do like a few of several types like red zebras, auratus, and such? maybe mixing a few types along with single assorted types?

Do not do the assorted... You live in Illinois you know how many breeders are in that state, not to mention there is a cichlid club too. Hit these places up and get a certain type rather than mixed. It will be more cost effective as well...

ok, will do that. but im asking if it would be advantageous to do several different species, as in having a few of each. or like 5 of 6 different species? so i should go with the labeled cichlids and not the assorted? i prolly wont be in illinois when i set up this tank but i will look into some breeders when i do.

thats a good question. well im in college right now and id like to have a fish room one day when i get a house but with my major that could really be anywhere. of course ill be doing my research once the tank is cycling into what ill be doing but im getting a general idea now. i mean i know how to do all the setup and cycling stuff but im just getting together a stock list for those tanks. i almost like to be too prepared.... sorry if i disappointed you.

The yellow labs are quite possibly the least aggressive from that list, and probably the most popular Mbuna. They'll mate like crazy too if you are into having little ones! I've had luck with keeping yellow labs with red and blue zebras, johanni, kenyi, acei and trewavasse. I think I've got more males than females when it comes to the blue cobalts, so they tend to chase on another, but other than that, it's a fairly peaceful and active Mbuna mix.

i was gonna do some parrotfish and some others, not sure of them yet ill have to take some notes when i go to my lfs.
