Hi all. First post and brand new to your forums! Thanks for all your knowledge sharing. Just want to share my new setup with you all. Just finished the basics of the tank. Back into the hobby after a very long break. (~10yrs). Refurbished a used tank from a craigslist ad, put some work, and this is what I have after a month...

Specs:

180g (6x2x2) with overflow

40g breeder sump setup with built-in drain
- bio balls (~20g)
- Seachem matrix pond (4 liters)
- Seachem matrix (6 liters)
- 3x Pure Chemi Elite
- 3x Pure Chemi Blue

3x Jäger 200w heater

Maxspect XF 150 gyre generator

Emperor UV 40w

Current USA Led Plus 36" (sump lighting)
Current USA Led Plus 48" (aquarium)
48W 70" Sumbmesible Arowana Tanning Lamp

Rio Buddie 50g RO unit

Custom hood build with moulding and egg-crate

Evotech Vectra M1 pump

Thanks! Okay... Did some more work on the tank. I had a LOT of bio balls left over so I decided to take out the durso standpipes from the overflow and fill them with bio balls. Used egg crate on the bottom to cover the bulkhead then about 8gals of bio balls on each side then another egg crate then some filter floss media. Took some pics during the process...

I don't think the internal overflow is intended for additional mechanical and bio filtration. I think that will significant decrease in flow without a direct drain pipe. IMO, your 40gallon sump should be sufficient. Do let me know if I'm missing a concept here.

I haven't noticed a decrease in flow. My thought was its just another taller wet/dry tower, extra biological filtration. Bad idea?
