195 gallon Split at Seam

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any updates or progress? Did the company email or call you back? Keep on them and dont back down. Take all this info from here and let the company know the info you have. I had a concern about a 250 acrylic I bought. Before I knew much about tanks, I bought one and the warranty ended the minute I handed over the cash. I would never buy another tank without a good warranty anymore. These manufacturers need to know that people want quality when it comes to their hobby and their fish. Hope all is well with your fish and you can resolve/fix the problem.

How is the bottom plate glued on, is it surrounded by the sides, or do the sides sit on top of the bottom. If the bottom is surrounded by the sides you won't be able to re-do the seals without completely tearing down the tank and doing all the seams.

I would not bother making it a double bottom. The glass didn't break, just the seam. A chunk of glass that size would cost a few hundred bucks.

I would not scuff the glass with sandpaper. For what it gets you, it also introduces thousands of tiny surface defects that weaken the glass. If it's tempered it will definitely compromise the strength of the pane, and it may even cause it to shatter while you are scuffing it.

The sides sit on the top of the bottom. I probably will not make a double bottom, just because of the cost factor. Also that is good to know about scuffing the glass.

I suggest a piece in the bottom only as a brace, not the entire bottom, just like the top brace, only in the bottom. Scuffing is just that, dont GOUGE the piss out of it, just scuff it. If scuffing would cause breakage, all my tanks are DOOMED since the bottoms are covered with rock scratches.. :screwy:
that sounds more cost effective, but if I add a bottom brace does that defeat the purpose of the "tempered" glass?

Nothing from the company yet no. I just noticed on my receipt that the warranty was supposed to mailed into the manufacture which I never did.:wall:
Next tank I buy I will make sure it has a hell of a warranty. I'm still hoping the manufacture will at least reseal it for a discounted price.

This what I came up with for a temporary setup, while we are figuring out the 195.

I just called the manufacture and they didn't really want to hear anything, they told me to call the place I bought it. So I did. The women who I spoke to is one of the owners, her husband being the other. Extremely nice, saying oh we'll take care of you, we'll get you a new tank, it was only a couple weeks past the warranty... Then :duh: I told her I cut a piece of silicone because I was going to repair it myself.... All she said then was, "oh noo, oh noo, that's no good." She said her husband was a doctors appt. to call back in an hour... That hopefully they can do something for us. So, we're waiting... Really hope they can do SOMEthing.

Ok so I called the LFS back and talked to the other owner very nice older guy, he told me I should never had touched that seam or I would have been able to just swap tanks,:wall: he said he already talked to the manufacture and they told him nope no swap..so he told me he had some $10 silicone called 999 that would patch my tank up and make it hold forever, he told me his version of how I should go about it, first clean everything to the best I can, then silicone the joint, then let it dry and take duck tape and lay it over that, then silicone that in place he said it would last forever, I just agreed and went to the next question cause that's really not was I was wanting to hear..so I say you know is there anything you can do for us any good deals? he replied well I have a 220 perfecto that goes for 689 with a 20 year warranty, but I can knock 150 off that price, I told him I did not have that kind of money right now so he proceeded to say just stop in an purchase the silicone. He also changed my warranty to within the 90 day time period so that I can tell the manufacture that it is still warranted which was nice of him. So got off the phone with him and called the manufacture told them my story and they put me on hold for like 3 mins came back and said the main guy wasn't there today could I please call back tomorrow, I think they are just going to shrug me off because I cut the silicone, but tomorrows another day...is $530 a good deal for a 220 perfecto tank with a 20 year warranty? or if i'm buying stuff I can get deals on a 125 gallon with stand and goodies for $300 and a 150 gallon with stand and goodies for 300 so $600 for 2 tanks= 275 gallons no warranty or a perfecto 220 gallon with no stand no goodies(but I already have stuff that fits besides stand) for $530 with the 20 yr warranty:barf:

Wait it out and maybe that lhs will get a really nice used tank within the next couple of weeks? By the way, check out what just happened to my 220. This is the front bottom, opposite side of yours. I was hoping I could save it. The tank has no live stock yet. I filled it 3/4 up so I can see if its going to burst. I feel your pain.

yea i've been all over craigslist but have not called around for a used tank from lfs thats a good idea, Ouch that sucks is it holding water? damn well least its before the live stock, but damn that hurts is it fixable? sorry about your luck, the aquarium gods are not so nice lately...

It was in my truck and I then when we were sliding it out, it must have hit a bolt in the bed and shipped it. It is holding water but in a very scary place. I am going to do what I suggested here in an earlier post and run a 12 inch wide piece of glass at the bottom for a brace and it should be fine. I hope.
