Have you checked out the backgrounds at http://www.designsbynature.net/? Great company.

I would also recommend LED lighting for the shimmer effect.
I did check them out, and I love their prices and selection. They have a "Ledge" BG that I considered (and loved) before I saw the Pangea Rocky IV. I wish they had a BG that extended out a little farther to give me the dramatic shadows I'm going for. I have a large enough footprint that I wont really miss 10"-12".

I will however be getting a BG for my 20gal from DBN.:naughty:

Excuse the quality, hand held w avail. light. Here is the first with the strip light (36" T5NO w/ 10k bulbs) in the middle of the tank (18" deep tank) :

And here it is with the light at the back of the glass top where the plastic meets the glass on the cover:

Very Nice! I can see the difference in the shadows. I like..:) I will definitely give that a try. I think attaching some of the BG (or rock modules) to the top in certain areas would also give me the look of light shining through an underwater cave. That along with moving the light I think will give me the versatility in lighting "Moods" that I want...

Thanks

Glad your getting your tank together Tomeiko! :headbang2

LED's a 3D background (I like the first BG posted) are a must! I have no idea if this will work, but I am cutting random shapes out plastic to place on top of the tank. With lighting above, it should help give that "sun beams in the water" look and still shimmer on the sand. Like that batman spotlight thing.

Sounds like it is going to be a really nice setup. You will definitely need to do a setup thread.

I really like the flooded cave theme, as I enjoy cavern diving and caving. The third photo was taken in Cenote Angelita - what appears to be the bottom is a dense cloud of hydrogen sulfide trapped in the halocline. The cloud is located between around 90' and 100' in depth. It is around 10' thick, totally opaque to light, and stinks strongly like rotten eggs - it took quite a while to get the smell out of my gear :irked:

Anyways, sorry for the derail, but it is a truly unique aquatic environment and I just had to comment!

Wow..thanks for the info on that pic, I absolutely love the lighting in that cave. I'm not jealous you've seen it in person now that I know how it smells. ;)

No worries about the derail, I firmly believe the day you stop aquiring knowledge is the day your laid to rest eternally;) thanks for sharing!:D

You've got great ideas, Tomeiko, and I'm really excited to see this tank unfold. It's fun to plan and take your time doing things right, isn't it? :) I'm subscribing to this thread.
