Common "difficult" first fish from Lake Malawi. Not "bad" per-say, just a little too challenging for the beginner with the 20 gallon tank at Petco, picking out fish... either because of overall size or aggression or both.

Too bad these are the most common from the "Mixed African" tank.

-Pseudotropheus crabro (bumblebee)
-Pseudotropheus lombardoi (Kenyi)
-Pseudotropheus sp. zebra (cobalt blue)
-Melanochromis auratus

I guarantee you can get a horror story about one or more of these fish from anyone who has kept Africans before.

They are in a 225g tank, which is huge, yes, but when i was asking around on different sites and such gobies were suggested with tropheus. No big deal, just conflicting opinions. Best of luck with yours. And even with only one, they are really cool fish.

So do you think I could get more? It's my first african aquarium, so I don't know too much about them.

That's a pretty useful post regarding starter africans, thank you for your contribution :)

It's not entirely correct. It may be ok in a larger aquarium, but 29g is nowhere near large. That's cool how you got them breeding and what not, but I'm afraid in this small of an aquarium it's a spectacle that I won't get to witness.. :(

& Tropheus?!?! Really, that's the one species in particular she said would be a bad choice to mix them with! You either have tremendous luck or like I assumed, a very large aquarium.

Gobies are super aggressive to their own kind. In a 120 I had three. With in three days two attack another one killing it. Then after a year my larger most likely male killed my female last week. They were in a 120. I recommend the gobies for trophs all the time. In a 29 I would not. Infact I would not keep a single pair of gobies in a 29. I tried it, and they were just way too aggressive for each other. (they were wild caught though)

I think you could house at least 1 more... I started with 9 gobies of two different species and have only lost 1, not even because of aggresion either (bloat) The only aggression I've seen is towards the one runt that is now grown up and doesnt get picked on anymore

My First African was a MBUNA Light blue with DARk blue stripes :)

Thanks, that's pretty much what I was told; not that I can't, it's just not a good idea in the tiny 29. Looks like it stays single then..

I don't really want to risk it, there is little cover in the aquarium right now. I am almost certain one of them will end up dead, sides I can't really tell them apart; male from female, at least not at the size they are now.
