everything looks SWELL paul...
you never imagined becoming such a cichla freak a year ago did you?
with your tats and pikes and dats.
now youve got like...15 cichla?
I have 3 kelberi, 3 piquiti, 2 pinima, 2 ocellaris, 2 orinocensis and 1 temensis, so 13. I'm cool with what I have, but I would like mirianae and intermedia yet (wouldn't mind xingu, of course).

I'm still a poly freak, I've just slowed down :D http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2804242#post2804242
and I still love my pikes and dats. I really miss my tat. That's why I want an armatus sometime in the not-so-distant future.

Here's my story, lol. Sometime in November 07, I was getting tired of fish and wanted to go down to one tank...an amazon whitewater biotope. Found MFK searching and joined up. My plans went out the window as I learned of all sorts of cool fish. Anyway, I looked at the p-bass ID thread a few times and never saw anything that I really liked and never found much interest in them. After I saw piquiti, I started to think about them a little more. Then I saw HCR's and couldn't resist. I figured I wouldn't find an azul, so I went with what I could find, which is the next best thing...orinos and tem(s) :D. Now I'm completely hooked and it's only been a few months since I got any. So, no, I didn't even think 4 months ago that I would be "such a cichla freak" :D

cool story!
i started with teethy characins actually....
always loved those guys.
then i met pbass...
i love both groups so much!
but having started with characins....i might revert back to characins anytime soon.hopefully both groups can co-exist....so far no problems.
but...we'll see...

the only fish I have from when it started to get old is my BGK, so it's still my favorite fish.

I hope that works out for you. I'm still contemplating an armatus w/ my bass. I wish I could get a group of tats big enough...that would be another option, but finding large tats isn't easy and will cost more than an armatus. The store HCR was talking about didn't have armatus, it had like a 3" GATF (or that's what it came in as). I can't tell at that size.

how big was the goliath?
they look great with pbass IMO.
and they are faster when eating...unlike tats that tend to wait around for food.

oh and congrats.:D

It was actually more like 4". Can you tell what species it is at that size? I like VATF (and the others), but I'm not going to burn $200 on one, especially at that size. I wouldn't know where to put it, either. The owner of the store looks at MFK occasionally, so I told him he should put a picture up, but I doubt he will. Maybe I can get him to take a picture for me and I'll post it up. I should have just offered to take a picture when I was there.

I need to do some more ATF research. I like the look of armatus better, but maybe a GATF would fit in with my bass more. How long would a 300wide last? Would one be okay in a 10x4 footprint for life?

sorry to being going off about characins...

so aparently at this size they should have stripes if vittatus. I'm still searching, but how do you tell from brevis/fork/etc.?

armatus BETTER!JMO.:naughty::drool::D
IMO armatus can be kept in something like that,GATF cant.
plus armatus look better,more attitude.
and they actually grow....
the problem with GATF is that they need a HUGE tank compared to other fish of the same size.
i could probably ID them at that size, with good pictures of course...
the best way to tell them all apart is head shape IMO.
