So floating around and looking like this:

is nothing?!

They hit food really hard and are ultra responsive. Basically like a mini-oscar for all intents and purposes. What's not to love?

Agreed NCStatefisher sounds like an idiot whos never kept bettas. Or hes the type of guy who buys "tough fish" cause they fight.

I'd also like to add, since I got distracted while making my first reply, that 2 male bettas in a 55 is dicey. I've heard of it being done... heck, I've seen videos of a colony of females and males all mixed together in large tanks. But in regards to the fish, I don't think it's healthy. That sounds like a stressful, harmful environment, with any number of fish.

Besides my original worry of them being blown around, bettas will patrol. If they find another betta within the tank you can bet they'll chase that guy around until one comes out the victor.

Maybe you could try something like dividing the tank into a few sections, with one betta contained to one end and the other at the opposite end, in a small 'territory' and blocked from each others' view until they get established. After a good amount of time, open up the tank so they each have their separate turf with a neutral area in the middle. Of course, lots of cover and hiding places. I think even if you had one betta in a large tank like that you need a lot of hiding spots since they just dont like the open.

I hade a 10gal tank divided in two for two bettas for a few years. after a little while they were no longer reactive to one another. On the other hand, I have seen bettas jump over dividers and even into nearby tanks to attack or seek a female. So I guess each fish is different.
