no "normal" filter is going to decrease your nitrate readings, only water changes will do that.
Water changes aren't the only method to reduce nitrates.

with 2 x eheim classics you need 4 x double taps so thats another $120
Double taps have become standard on the classic line, and are now being included in the cost.

Double tap connectors are basically dual ball valves with compression barb fittings, and a compression nut to seperate. Type in Eheim double tap connectors into google to see what they look like.

Hi, I know this thread is not new but I just relized it, if anyone reading this post is planning to buy a new filter check http://www.bigalsonline.com/ before you buy one local. I saved more then $50 with the shipping buying from them to the local shops around my area.

I think another good thing about the eheims is they have replacment parts.

True, but the original poster was attributing his Fluval canisters with keeping nitrates low..... which is not a correct assessment.

Also, as I'm sure you know, nitrate control (with the exception of water changes) can be very difficult with big cichlids. There just aren't many other options for most people with standard equipment. Nitrate reactors are not very effective at all IMO, and it would take a jungle of plants to do much good with monster fish!
